Its a pity to find out that members of the health team who should knw each others worth and importance are busy insulting and making a big deal out of a mere TITLE.. Lives are at stake, physicians do ur job, physiotherapists we do ours.. No tresspassing..

YES, Physiotherapists are allowed to use Dr prefix. There is no objections for this.

This was announced by IAP INDIAN ASSOCIAN OF PHYSIOTHERAPY. The same was published on 18 Augest 2011 THE HINDU - NEW DELHI.

Every clinical health professional writes Dr. before their name as a matter of tradition and convention and no one is allowed to write Dr. before their name if she or he is having no Ph.D. or M.D. as a matter of right.''

IAP general secretary Dr. Sanjiv Kumar Jha (P.T.) said: "Physiotherapists prefixes Dr. as per the resolution of IAP, we have also warned IMA and MCI for defaming the physiotherapists as they have no statutory power to regulate physiotherapy profession in India, hence no right to publish wrong information about physiotherapy as a whole.

Physiotherapists are giving treatment by physical means and they never prescribe any drugs,'' he added.

INDIAN EXPRESS APRIL 10 2013 Publication as bellow.

Physiotherapists in the city are an unhappy lot as they claim that various organisations are trying to degrade their profession and challenge their right to prefix the title of a doctor before their name.

The Indian Association of Physiotherapists (IAP) is trying hard to get the physiotherapy council bill passed in the forthcoming monsoon session. The bill proposes widening the definition of physiotherapy, changing the name of the council, segregation of occupational therapists from the definition and having a higher pay scale and cadre.

Physiotherapists use Dr as a prefix and PT as a suffix with their name so that a patient gets to know that the doctor is a physiotherapist, a practice not undertaken by any other stream of medical science, said Dr Ali Irani, president IAP.

The IAP had to issue a public notice recently, stating that the Medical Council of India and Indian Medical Association did not have the statutory power to regulate the physiotherapy profession in the country.

Dr Sanjeev Kumar Jha, general secretary of the IAP, has issued a stern warning to refrain from defaming physiotherapy.

Physiotherapy is a system of medicine that involves diagnosing and treating a range of diseases and disabilities by using physical means, but some people are defaming the profession by stating that physiotherapists were prescribing medicines, said Irani. "Physiotherapy is not confined to exercise. It can diagnose, examine, treat and prevent problems caused by pain, disability and disease, sport and work-related injuries, ageing and long periods of inactivity. Hence, physiotherapists rightly put Dr as a prefix," said Dr Shaila Sabnis, principal, Sancheti Institute's College of Physiotherapy and former convenor of the IAP's Pune branch.

"We have informed members about the public notice and in no way do we want to deceive people," she added. Dr Shweta Basu Roy, lecturer Sancheti Institute's College of Physiotherapy and a member of IAP, said physiotherapy is a totally drugless therapy and that a physiotherapist goes through a four and half year degree course and then 2-3 years of post graduate course to study the discipline.

No degree or college on itself can honour anybody with Dr. exept for Phd in other case the rights are given to council only.
I am a physiotherapist and registered myself to Maharashtra state OT & PT council (Act 2004)
My certificate from govt has been prefixed with Dr.
I guess there is nothing much to crib around just stop feeling insecure and do understand you are not having any monopoly on prefixing Dr.

Being a physiotherapist myself, I feel that unless there is a legislation we cannot safely call ourselves doctors. We have to fight for a council like Maharashtra PT OT council. There no ortho person can dare dictate a physio prescription to us as any person other than those who are registered in the above council can prescribe a physio program.
