COMMENTARY: Refusing service in the name of religion is never acceptable

Jul 17, 2013 Full story: www.religionnews.com 28

In Vermont, a country inn declined to provide a wedding reception for a same-sex marriage. In Hawaii, the owner of a bed and breakfast refused a double room to a lesbian couple. Both said providing service would violate their religious faith.

I guarantee you religion cannot be used to discriminate against gender, race, and other religions when it comes to business no matter what scripture is used to back it up. This is exactly why we need ENDA to cover sexual orientation and gender identity. If you aren't committing a crime, drunk and belligerent, or causing a scene then no one should be able to deny you service.

Concerning companies not providing insurance for contraceptives....I understand why some churches would not provide it, but it seems to me it is a good business practice to do so for a business. I don't know the relative costs of insurance vs. pregnancy leave, but I would think the insurance would be cheaper. If a business owner wants his/her employees on the job, instead of having to pay to replace them, plus provide the leave for the pregnant employee, where is the cost benefit?

the current version of ENDA which just passed out of a Senate Committee allows for exemptions for religious organizations. We must defeat the current ENDA bill now and pass one that DOES provide actual employment protections for ALL citizens.
BTW I have been searching the Bible and still can't find what part these 'christians' are using as a loophole to get around:
Matthew 25:31-46. They sure aren't treating me the way God says to in this passage. Anyone able to help? I sure what to find that loophole passage!
New American Standard Bible (NASB)
The Judgment (Parable of the Goats and Sheep)
31 “But when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on His glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before Him; and He will separate them from one another, as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats; 33 and He will put the sheep on His right, and the goats on the left.
34 “Then the King will say to those on His right,‘Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 35 For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; 36 naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.’ 37 Then the righteous will answer Him,‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty, and give You something to drink? 38 And when did we see You a stranger, and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You? 39 When did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ 40 The King will answer and say to them,‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.’
41 “Then He will also say to those on His left,‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels; 42 for I was hungry, and you gave Me nothing to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me nothing to drink; 43 I was a stranger, and you did not invite Me in; naked, and you did not clothe Me; sick, and in prison, and you did not visit Me.’ 44 Then they themselves also will answer,‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not [a]take care of You?’ 45 Then He will answer them,‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’ 46 These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

I disagree. They should face the same fines and other criminal penalties as any other business that violates anti discrimination laws.

What is the end game here? I believe it is to attempt to destroy religion and the practice of it. Take a close look at who supports abortion rights, gay rights, anything that tangles with religious beliefs. When they have destroyed religion, particularly Christianity, then they will have destroyed the bedrock upon which this country was built. It will fall and be in the hands of the Communists who said they would takeover this country not by force but by undermining it from the inside out.

You mean ENDA will be utterly useless because religion can always be used as a justification to discriminate?

No one can destroy religion. No one is keeping your from believing or following your beliefs but religion doesn't give anyone the right to break the law or discriminate in a business or public place.

How about refusing service in the name of DECENCY?

I refuse to serve queers at my store because I am a decent person that believes in people being decent.

Dear, you do not own a store, or any other place of business. The only thing I know that you do own is a criminal record that includes a shoplifting bust where you arrested wearing women's underwear. Decidedly not normal and considering that they were probably your mother's, not decent.

I we take a look at who is supporting all the things you hate can we also take a look at the parts of the Bible you ignore when it comes to gays and lesbians?
Luke 10:25-37
25 And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying,“Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”
26 He said unto him,“What is written in the law? How readest thou?”
27 And he answering said,“‘Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind, and thy neighbor as thyself.’”
28 And He said unto him,“Thou hast answered right; this do, and thou shalt live.”
29 But he, wanting to justify himself, said unto Jesus,“And who is my neighbor?”
30 And Jesus answering said,“A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his raiment and wounded him and departed, leaving him half dead.
31 And by chance there came down a certain priest that way. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.
32 And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him and passed by on the other side.
33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was. And when he saw him he had compassion on him,
34 and went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn and took care of him.
35 And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host and said unto him,‘Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again I will repay thee.’
36 Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbor unto him that fell among the thieves?”
37 And he said,“He that showed mercy on him.” Then said Jesus unto him,“Go and do thou likewise.”

Matthew 25:31-46
21st Century King James Version (KJ21)
31 “When the Son of Man shall come in His glory and all the holy angels with Him, then shall He sit upon the throne of His glory.
32 And before Him shall be gathered all nations, and He shall separate them one from another as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats.
33 And He shall set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left.
34 Then shall the King say unto them on His right hand,‘Come, ye blessed of My Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
35 For I hungered, and ye gave Me meat; I was thirsty, and ye gave Me drink; I was a stranger, and ye took Me in;
36 naked, and ye clothed Me; I was sick, and ye visited Me; I was in prison, and ye came unto Me.’
37 Then shall the righteous answer Him, saying,‘Lord, when saw we Thee hungering and fed Thee, or thirsty and gave Thee drink?
38 When saw we Thee a stranger and took Thee in, or naked and clothed Thee?
39 Or when saw we Thee sick, or in prison, and came unto Thee?’
40 And the King shall answer and say unto them,‘Verily I say unto you, inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these My brethren, ye have done it unto Me.’
41 “Then shall He say also unto them on the left hand,‘Depart from Me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels.
42 For I hungered, and ye gave Me no meat; I was thirsty, and ye gave Me no drink;
43 I was a stranger, and ye took Me not in; naked, and ye clothed Me not; sick and in prison, and ye visited Me not.’
44 Then shall they also answer Him, saying,‘Lord, when saw we Thee hungering or athirst or a stranger, or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister unto Thee?’
45 Then shall He answer them, saying,‘Verily I say unto you, inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to Me.’
46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into life eternal.”

Yes. The current version has religious exemption clauses that will protect 'religious' organizations. Seminaries would be exempt from discrimination laws. So would any other 'faith based business'.

That's illegal. Your "store" can easily be shut for denying service to anyone. Run along and have mommy set you up a Kool-Aid stand for you.

NONSENSE. What you're whining about is that NO religion in the United States, including Christianity, has the power to trample on the rights of those who choose to follow other religions. The first words of the First Amendment make that very clear:

"Congress shall pass no law respecting the establishment of religion or prohibiting the practice thereof..."

These few words give EACH side what they want; freedom OF religion to those who follow it and freedom FROM religion to those of us who choose to reject it. Militant religionists have been whining about that ever since, mostly because they DON'T get to legislate their religious BELIEFS (which of course aren't facts) into law. Too bad for them.
