If it works ,'DON'T FIX IT'. The flood wall that was built after the flood of 1936 has served us well, leave the darn thing stay as it is. SOME of you phonies that hang around city hall should go out and get a real job, (in a field you know some thing about,).If you can't make the PARK work with the WALL where it is, I suggest, Get rid of the PARK.

Speaking of the Army Corp. of Engineers, What a Piss Poor job of Levy repair/maint. in 2005 .... Katrina Hurricane.
It is tempting to tear down what works when it is not storming now. Please do not remove the wall.

In such a hurry to tear down what works i.e. flood wall... WHAT about replacing some ancient rusting stairway over the bridge by the train ??? Or bridges themselves?

You'd have to be crazy to move a flood wall. First of all money does not grow on trees and Fitchburg has SO MANY OTHER PRESSING ISSUES. The park is under-utilized because most people don't want to go there. It is not because of the wall needing to be moved. You move a wall only if there are so many people who want to go but cant fit in the park...you dont move it if nobody wants to go there. Think before you ruin a perfectly fine structure at the expense of the taxpayers!!!

The point of getting rid of streb (I thought) was to put an end to these stupid vision 20/20 stupidities. Larry Cassassa is as much of a problem as the previous director.
This folly was originally a waste of funds and still is. Now I see we will continue to drop long term constructive solutions for the sake of some shortsighted backward beautification of the river.

You want to beautify the river, CLEAN THE BANKS. We can start with having DAVE PELLETIER clean just a little bit of the tons of their waste they neglectfully allowed to festoon the river banks not to mention the broken fence adjacent to the river that came down in 2004 and allowed them to litter the river without redress by the city.
please leave

Sure blame Streb for a Wong idea. She is the one pushing the Nashua, this was HER "vision"

You people have an appalling lack of vision for your city. The flood wall will be moved to the back of the park, not eliminated. It's a low cost improvement, using money that was only available to spend on park improvements. Yeah, Fitchburg needs a lot of things, and one of them is more people coming downtown and living downtown, something a revamped Riverfront Park will attract. That ugly concrete wall doesn't do anything for this city.

Aesthetics are so much more important than safety. That ugly concrete wall was put there for a reason, moron. It does the job it was supposed to do-leave it alone. Where will your vision be when the park becomes destroyed by the flooding that occurs every few Springs? We may have an appalling lack of vision, but you have an appalling lack of common sense.

There hasn't been a flood that would have impacted the park since the 1930s. Even the flood of John Fitch Highway a few years ago would only have gone half way up the bank to the park.

Flood of 1938. Unusually heavy snowfall with an early thaw and heavy rainfall. Streets were flooded. That's why the wall was built. Can you honestly say this won't EVER happen again? The dams all through our city are in sketchy shape. One of them decides to go and that wall is not there and you will have a problem. Why ask for trouble?

says to leave the wall alone.
There are plenty of other "parks" in Fitchburg that could use the money. Parks that are actually used and need the maintenance as well.
Maybe putting a splash park down in Coolidge Park where the pool now sits empty. Ya know,, next to that absolutely hideous structure that Streb pushed through.
Removing a wall, put up after a disastrous flood in the 1930s, based on "it happened once YEARS ago" is a foolish mistake made with no forethought. But hey.. if you are part of the Unitil Board of Directors it follows along nicely.

Fitchburg is like it is because of the trash that comes into the city and then breeds. Just like rats and cockroaches. Only good thing that could happen with the removal of the wall would be a huge flood that would wipe out the hookers, drug dealers and PR trash that resides here.

No it won't attract anything. We are once again seeing money that can be used to rebuild the stone house at Coghall squandered.

Not sure exactly how the quote goes: Those who do not learn from the past are doomed to repeat it???

Ms. Wong is not originally from here and is young. That is no excuse not to research the history of that wall, and the entire area, simply because they don't intend to build any structures in the park. Most of downtown was built over water, much of which still flows underground, sometimes through basements of old buildings in that area. Before the wall was put there, there was nothing to contain the water from not only the Nashua, but all the small tributaries that flow below ground.

It is a typical of our young, self-centered Mayor to not look beyond what she thinks would be good for that ridiculous park. Go ahead, make it more pleasing to the yuppified eye. Just be prepared to be responsible for what happens when the next "100 year storm" comes along.

BTW, with all the streetlights that are off in this city, does anyone know why the lights are on every night in Riverside Park? Shows where are Mayor's priorities lie.

Nobody wants to go downtown, park or no park. You should just accept that instead of constantly finding more ways to spend taxpayer money on a foolish concept. Do you think I'm wrong then all you have to do is put it to a vote at the next election...ask on a ballet if the voters would likely use the park downtown if the taxpayers pay to move the wall. You can see what kind of response you get prior to spending the money.

The Riverside park is just one more silly waste of taxpayers money. Let's just admit we made a mistake and stop throwing good money after bad.
