BELGRADE, Serbia — Serb nationalists burned a Croatian flag Saturday to protest a decision by a U.N. war crimes court overturning guilty verdicts against two Croatian generals, and the prime minister called the decision a blow to reconciliation in the postwar Balkans.

Many in Serbia are furious that appeals judges at the Netherlands-based tribunal on Friday freed Ante Gotovina and Mladen Markac, who had been previously sentenced to lengthy prison terms for killing and expelling Serbs from Croatia during an offensive in 1995.

"This will have serious consequences at reconciliation in the region," Serbia's premier Ivica Dacic said. "How can someone demand that we condemn all crimes if others are allowed not to condemn the crimes against Serbs?"

Croatians, meanwhile, consider the decision proof that they were the victims in the Balkan conflict. The fighting in Croatia was part of the wars that erupted across the Balkans with the breakup of Yugoslavia in the 1990s. The most deadly was in Bosnia, where Serbs battled Muslims and Croats in a four-year struggle that claimed some 100,000 lives.

Hundreds of supporters of the extremist Serbian Radical Party rallied in front of the presidency building in the center of Belgrade demanding that the government abandon plans to join the 27-nation European Union and cut ties with the court in The Hague, Netherlands.

The crowd carried banners reading "Stop The Hague" and chanted nationalist slogans in support of the party leader, Vojislav Seselj, whose own trial is ongoing at the tribunal for the role in the atrocities against non-Serbs.

"Serbia has done nothing to help its own heroes who are jailed in The Hague," said Radical Party official Nemanja Sarovic.
Later Saturday, a separate protest by another far-right group was held in front of the EU headquarters.

Even liberal Serbs have warned that Friday's ruling created a sense of injustice and could stir nationalist sentiments. Serbia's government has scaled down cooperation with the tribunal, while Serbia's President Tomislav Nikolic said the verdict was political.
Dacic insisted "this verdict was clearly political ... designed to clear Croatia of crimes committed against Serbs."

Serbian media on Friday and Saturday repeatedly carried file footages of tens of thousands of Croatian Serb refugees fleeing in August 1995 in long columns on tractors, cars and carts. Many still have not returned to their homes.

In Croatia, the two generals received state honors and a hero's welcome on Friday, with tens of thousands jubilant people gathering in the capital, Zagreb, to greet them.

The country is also marking a remembrance day this weekend in the eastern town of Vukovar, which was heavily bombed by the Serb-led military in at the start of the Serb-Croat war in 1991.
The war erupted when Croatia declared independence from Serb-led Yugoslavia triggering a rebellion by minority Serbs. About 10,000 people died in the conflict.

The Serbs were the aggressors in 1991 and after in Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Kosovo, and they have to pay the price like the Nazis after WWII. Non of the Allies nations ere convicted of any crimes after WWII. Croatia deserve the same treatment as Allies in WWII.

Those people perished in Oluja have no justice for them. Their souls will not have peace. Not until their deaths are avenged. Same goes for all who commited crimes. Crime does not know, race, color, sex, religion.

when you b reak into some, tie them up, beat them up and want to kick them out and steal their house, but somehow they fight back and throw you out, you cannot compain they beat you up ,or say their crime is equal to yours, so use your heads , not your hearts. It was right to let them go,yes it is sad people died.but a bully with the fourth largest army in europe stars a fight against hunting rifles, rains missiles down from planes, fires from warships into houses, and then looses the war complains about it.....like i said use your head

when you besiege and attack army baracks, policemen and young conscriped soldiers without being attacked, when you single out certain group of your countrymen, and when you blow their cars and houses every night up, when you go at night and fire rocket misiles at their villages, when a mob of crazy nationalists roams the town and destroys property that belongs to these unwanted people (Kristalnacht in Zadar), when you kill your own people who really want to solve the problem peacefully you cannot say you are innocent.
you attacked first because you were given green light to do this. It was a premediated action in which even own people were sacricifiased for bigger goal (partisan tactic).
The Serbs acted really stupidly, you outsmarted them but it doesn't mean all of you are good guys and all of them are bad guys.
The Serbs didn't have any power behind them.

Yes indeed people need to remember how all this started,i remember terrorists attacking Army Baracks full of conscripts in SLOVENIA,then when the Army tried to restore order they were branded as the agressor looking for a fight by the Western Media,i still have the British newspaper cuttings from that time to prove it.

It's sad that the Serbs thinks al Croats are Ustasa, this is not true most Serbs think that the Partisan where a serb organisation, and that it started in Serbia, this is not true.''The first Partisan uprising occurred in Croatia on 22 June 1941, when forty Croatian Communists staged an uprising in the Brezovica woods between Sisak and Zagreb.[24] An uprising occurred in Serbia two weeks later led by Tito (Uzice Republic), but it was quickly defeated by the Axis forces and support for the Partisans in Serbia thereafter dropped. Partisan numbers from Serbia would be diminished until 1943 when the Partisan movement gained upswing by spreading the fight against the axis'' see not all Croats where ustasa, just like not all serbs where Chetniks,'' Croatian Partisans were integral to overall Yugoslav Partisans; by the end of 1943 Croatia proper, with 24% of the Yugoslav population, provided more Partisans than Serbia, Montenegro, Slovenia and Macedonia combined which collectively accounted for 59% of the Yugoslav population.[28] The Croatian partisans were unique in that they had the highest numbers of local Jews in their ranks of any other European resistance'' But the Serbs would like the rest of the world to believe that all Croats are Nazi scum, and that every Croat loved Hitler. look at Stjepan Filipovic http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stjepan_Filipovi... .
See the Serbs would like the rest of the world to believe that the Croats, are the bad guys, but Yugoslavia began to go bad when more Serbs with pro serbia idea's got power and used it in a way that was pro serbian and not pro yugoslavia, see Milosovic.

In june 1941. Hahha croat nazi we were attacking germans by the end of April, Serb resistance burned their trucks, attacked small outposts and we attacked their patrols at night time.

Also most of "partisans from croatia" were Serbs who lived there, they couldn't and croatian nazi terror anymore so they had to stand up to it. My grandmother and granpa were partisans from croatia, both Serbs, entire villages where Serbs lived were massacred by croat psychopaths so they had to join and fight. It's better to die in combat than sit home waiting to be being mutilated to pieces by some croat ustashe butcher

All I know is that most partisans from croatia were of Serb nationality while most croats joined ustashe and germans in fight, they viewed it as a "liberation" from Serbs and a chance to create some new country which never existed before. Today we know it as croatia.

jewish people are far from God's people with their ultimate goal to rule the world, in media, economy and military way. We are all God's people dumbass, His creation, not only jews.

Well people, every evil has its good side. Look at it on the bright side. If nothing else this will lower the percentage of Serb people on joining EU even more. Only 41 percent of Serbs want to join EU, now it'll drop to 37 percent. Western europians have shown again what kind of antiserb scumbags they are.

the croatian flag represents its constitutional people.

p.s i find it ironic that a serb can walk into a serbian thrift store in belgrade pay 25 euro's and buy a croatian flag and then go to a public square and burn it....

i bet that was the worst 25 euros that these serbs spent in there meaningless pointless life..
