Well, at least we got something for him. It could have been worse.

So....Pink Baroness was wrong about us not getting anything for Jaybo, and Mr Wiggles was wrong about him going to Anaheim. Good thing they're not betting boys...HAHA

All Calgary has is his negotiating rights. Doesn't mean he's signing there before July 1st. And all Calgary really gave up was a 3rd round pick, which is exactly what was projected to be the value of his negotiating rights. Leopold is a 29 year old defenseman who earned just $1.5 million last year and like Bouwmeester he's a UFA. Word was that Calgary wasn't hot to trot on signing him to a new deal.

Unless the Sutter brothers knock his socks off, I wouldn't be shocked to see Bouwmeester and his agent stick to their guns and wait for July 1st to see what offers come in. And frankly, Calgary has cap issues, so it's going to be hard for them to match the dollars a few other teams may throw at Bouwmeester, including Anaheim.

Another horrendous decision for a mediocre team. It seems to me that the management of this team strides to be in the bottom of the cellar every season.

Let's see. Leopold probably won't sign, and that's the 3rd round pick we gave up a few years back to Toronto for nothing.. back to square one. It's going to be a LOOOOOONNNGGGG season.

Oh, and don't forget that I was the one who called for the drafting of Kulikov weeks ago and said that he would be the pick if available at 14.

Rest assured Calgary has a plan to arrange the cap to sign him. Common sense...use some.

Calgary is at $44.5 million in cap salary for 2009-10, which leaves them just $12 million under the cap, and last year they had cap issues and had to play with a short roster because of it. So realistically they have about $10-11 million to work with. Bouwmeester takes $6-7 million (though if they do it long term they can average that down through declining amounts in later years), but that still leaves them with only 7 forwards signed for 2009-10.

Calgary may very well end up signing him, but it's no layup.

Why would Anaheim want him? they just traded pronger to free up cap space, and bowmeester is going to want pronger dollars. Bow is younger, but the ducks are on a budget.

Good move to get something for nothing. The cats got a third rounder, which is nothing to dance in the streets about, but also have the rights to a pretty good defenseman that they can shower with affection for a few days to see if they can get him locked up.

Personally, I would have preferred they had gotten the rights to Cammalleri, as he addresses a glaring need, but them's the breaks.

Anaheim is not on a budget. They have more cap space than Calagary, who is already at $44.5 million. First, having moved Pronger, Anaheim is now only committed to about $33.6 million in cap salary next year, and adding Niedermayer back in brings them back to only about $40 million or so - if he even takes a salary that large. They would want him because Pronger only had a year left on his contract, Niedermayer is probably only going to play for one more year and that means they need a puck moving d-man for the long haul. So in fact, Anaheim has plenty of cap space in which to operate. Even if resigning Rob Niedermayer, Christenen and Marchant costs them $8 million or so (which might be on the high side), that still leaves them room to bring in Bouwmeester, especially if they structure it long term with declining amounts in later years (so the cap hit is lessened).

We'll lock up Leopold. We were dealing rights here, not players. We will hopefully go after a Cammalleri type UFA come Wednesday. Going by the HockeyBuzz website... it's safe to say we have... about 15mil free for next year? That's most likely a low number. Cammalleri will net at least 4 million alone next season. It's going to be maybe 1 or 2 quality guys coming in here. We still have people like Booth and Anderson not yet locked up. Then there's guys like Dvorak and Peltonen. Personally I say both of them are gone. We need the cap space for good free agent players. Sexton has shown to be aggressive and I think that is exactly what he is going to do. Out with the old... I'm sure he's banking on Kulikov being our franchise blue liner. Not a bad idea. Bou came in a few years ago with the same expectations and in many ways he achieved all and more. Calgary is also rumored to be shopping Jokinen. Not easy considering his salary. Bertuzzi you can bet will also be gone. Lol, want to bet we go after him too? That would suck. We picked up some good young centers today. I'm very excited about Drew Shore. Looks like a solid future player. Looks like Booth, Weiss, Horton and Frolik are going to be the center of the team again. At least we finally got a center in Reinprecht to help a little. I hope we go after some good additions. We need them.

Sexton is worthless...

In true Panthers fashion - another botched player deal and another lame draft.

Last night, during the first round, Bouw was worth a lot more. Now, we get Leopold, a d-man nobody wants (constantly traded) and lame pick.

What did you think he was worth? At this point most teams were willing to just wait until July 1st to sign him without giving up anything. We were never going to get a 25 goal scorer for him. Not even at the trade deadline. Leopold is a solid puck moving d-man who can start the rush much like Bouw did. He will fit in better under Deboer. Our focus should be on the offensive side of the puck right now though.

The Panthers are a team going nowhere fast. Management does not have what it takes to make them a winner. Jay and the Flames will win the cup in the next 2 years.

Yeah ok. Let's not forget that first Jay has to sign there first and second... the Flames are way over the cap. They need to shred some salary space first. I will say, though, that if they do sign Bouwmeester, he and Phaneuf are going to be one of the best defensive pairings ever.
