Thanks Jack ! I definitely learned something today. As opposed to other people on here, I can admit when theres something I was wrong about or wasn't aware of.
Last I heard of him in the news he was running a concrete business business in Calgary as well as trying out for a semi-pro baseball team in Calgary, but don't know if he was cut or not. I imagine he would certainly fall into a Dustin Pedroia type of player though.

So... I'm an Islander fan but the Isles sans Turgeon narrowly beat the Pens sans Lemieux. That Pens team peaked during the season ending win streak as was already crashing in the first round before the Isles beat them in the second. The Isles obviously would have had a better chance with Turgeon but I can't back the idea that the cup was practically theirs. Still... it was a good year. They began to fall apart after that due to the horrific ownership stuff.
I wouldn't bet you will find too many writers who think today's Detroit team is good enough to compare to the Isles dynasty teams.
It's nice that you did also correct your Montreal statement from the other day when you said they won 5 in a row before the Isles.
Useless trivia: if Detroit wins on Friday it will be the first time since the 40s that the west has won more cups than the east in a given decade... though this one only includes 9 games due to lockout.
Obviously the Isles would have been better with Pierre. That was a great year for them. I'll never forget Volek crushing the hopes of the Penguins.

Hockey is so much different now. Keeping a team with the same core players together for more than 2-3 years is difficult.

Yeah, I can admit if Im wrong. I am human :)

After 40 years of NOTHING, those Islanders made hockey relevant in New York -- all of New York, not just LI. Their fall began when they hired ex-Ranger Maloney to be the GM. Um, who would you rather have, Clark Gillies or Nick Fotiu?????
I am convinced the Rangers sent Maloney over to ruin the Isles. Trading Turgeon for Kirk Muller and Matt Schneider... the worst trade in NHL history. They have never recovered since. It's funny when you look at the Penguins drafts over the last few years: Fleury, Crosby, Staal, Malkin = Stanley Cup. What do the Isles have to show for all their high draft picks... DiPietro and another 13 years. It sucks being an Islander fan. They need 3 Taveras' and 3 Hedmans' to get into the playoffs.

Dude, the Islanders need a 30 team playoff format to make the playoffs. Even then they'd figure out a way to make it a struggle.
