If the Islanders have to break glass in case of an emergency with goaltender Rick DiPietro 's balky left knee, at least they know they have a quality backup in place to give them a chance to remain competitive.

The biggest travesty in this all is trading all of those picks to get De Haan. When a guy is expected to go late 1st round and De Haan himself was stunned he was picked so early that spells trouble. I think Kassian would have been the pick at 12 like a John LeClair/Cam Neely type power forward. Buffalo was licking their chops when he fell to them at 12. The Isles are obviously going nowhere next year so we should get another really high pick. But, I think Garth missed the boat with Cammalleri or Havlat. When this team is turning the corner in 2 to 3 years those guys would have looked sweet with Tavares.

I agree about DeHaan but I also think Kassian is/was overrated. People have compared him to Lucic as well. I don't think he's going to sniff at the success of LeClair, Neely, or Lucic. I would have been fine with DeHaan at 16 (I don't think he would have been available at 26) but wasting more picks to move to 12 for him was stupid. Those picks could have meant finding a diamond in the rough in later rounds... being at least able to take a shot at something besides goaltending in the second and third rounds. This draft was poorly executed.

Slim picking for remaining FA. Wouldn't mind Garth signing the 2 or 3 of the following players.
RW- Nik Antropov (Rangers)
RW - Jason Williams (Columbus)
LW - Alex Tanguay (Montreal)
D - Dennis Seidenberg (Carolina)
D - Jordan Leopold (Florida)
D - Dmitri Kalinin (Phoenix)
Any thoughts?
Damn! Atlanta signed Antropov to a four-year $16 million contract. WTF Snow....

We still need bulk.We have Iggulden and Joensuu that have some beef and should be ready to make the big team.I see that we just signed some minor league players but that doesn't help us.Unless Garth is replenishing the minors to bring up some people down there.Don't count Mannino out of the picture. He came up last year and stood on his head and held his own.If DP never came to camp this year ,we would'nt miss him.

Four million a year is a bargain for a goalie. The DP deal has no bearing on free agents. Professional atheletes get hurt in all sports. The Islanders insured the contract, so if DP does not come back he gets paid and the Isles are unaffected. The building does affect their ability to lure free agents. Shortly, this problem will be remedied. The stench of Milbury will soon be a distant memory be patient.
I dont think you can insure contracts that are that long.. I'm 99% sure

Just found this article that relates to DiPietro's contract....
"The contract is guaranteed. DiPietro will be paid in full should he retire because of injury; if he ends his career otherwise before the deal expires, he would forfeit the remaining dollars."

Garth Snow was the GM when DiPietro signed his 15-year deal, not Mike Milbury. Although, Milbury did draft DiPietro.

That article fails to explain the details. They initially had trouble working out this deal. The sticking point was that they could only guarantee 5 years of it based on the insurance policy. Eventually the team (Wang) agreed to guarantee the contract beyond the terms of the insurance.

This contract was signed after Snow became GM but this was brokered directly by Wang. This one cannot truly be blamed on Milbury or Snow.
