The stops are made because according to the law the driver has to take a 45 minute break after 4½ hours of driving (or a 15 min and 30 min breaks etc in 5h 15min). This is to prevent them from falling asleep while driving.
I'm sure the sponsors understood him. Many companies in Finland are and are going to be very international and Finns are speakign english more fluently. It's just a cultural thing, we're a bit shy and not that open.
ABC food is horrible, I know.
