If you pull up Fran Tarkenton's stats, you'll see they weren't really great.Hell the early years before the trade to the NYG,may have been better or equal to his return and the great Viking teams.
Yes it's more of a passing league today, but back then you needed balance, and there were pass 1st teams back then. The AFL was very much just that.Dallas could air it out.
The thing I noticed most with Tarkenton were the yac.Ponder's 1st 2 years #'s are pretty much what Tark did,he had no OL either. It's the YAC that Ponder must improve on.If he has to have low #'s at least hit some big plays and get that YAC up.Then as now,we'll need a RB and defense to carry the rest.

Back in 1961 and 1962 Sonny Jurgenson was the top passer, averaging around 3400 yds in a 14 game season.Jim Brown had around 1400 yds running as that departments leader.
Today's passing leaders, mostly Bree's and Rodger's are up around 5200 yds in a season. They've had no ground game to speak of,inflating the #'s somewhat.
With a well crafted offensive scheme, and getting that YAC up,Ponder can succeed.Peterson and the D have to do their part.
Tarkenton's proves it can work.

The math has today's leaders averaging around 325 yds a game=5200 yd season.
In 1961/62 around 248 a game.
Didn't research Jurgenson's ground attack but we all know recent GB and N.O ground attacks were below avg.Maybe that would factor on the mid 70's yd a game difference between then and now.
At any rate Ponder needs big play ability and YAC to increase. We have enough ground game to make up that 77 yd difference,if Ponder can avg 248 yds passing a game.

If ponder can avg 248 yards we would be a playoff team. You gotta remember the NFL was a different league in the 60's for instance Joe Namath is in the hall of fame with 50 percent completion percentage. Ponder would be a good QB in the 60's athletically better than tarkenton, QB completion 59 is better than Frans at 57.

Tarkenton was a leader also make him the QB of the 2013 vikings at his best the vikings would make the playoffs.

Y/A has to improve, and by better than a yard, big play needs to be part of every game.
