Other than individual effort it is hard to gauge a team in the preseason. There are a couple things than can be looked at. Biggest thing I noticed is points given up by D. Averaging 15.3 pts given up by D. This is 3rd lowest avg of all teams. Yes I know they aren't playing against full first teams with many, including Vikes, sitting key starters. What it really shows is the improvement over last years D. That unit and scheme would not have held teams to 15. Would have been more like 30. Speaking of which Cincinnati is giving up league worst 33 pts/gm. Guess they really miss Zimmer.

D also picked off Alex Smith and the KC 1st team twice. How many 2 INT games did the D have last year. Plus they added a 3rd pick vs KC 2nd string. Zimmer has them in position to make them plays instead of soft zone that gets destroyed by opposing QBs.

While there remains questions at QB, the D problem looks to be fixed. It will be more fun to watch this year as I don't expect all the 4th quarter collapses with a Zimmer D.

I'm noticing a more stable offense. Passing game has take a leap forward. As you've stated before, it's not the opponents best defenses that we've faced, but it (Vikings Offense) seems better than last years.

Seems we have the best coaching staff since Bud Grant and are rookie QB will be the best in our division in two years, maybe the best QB the vikings ever had. I wish Childress was still around because I forecast a Superbowl appearance IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS.

Stubby, did you hear something? I thought I heard a Fake Vikings Fan say something like, "blah blah blah, Qb."

Anyway as you well know stubby, the Vikings are doing things for the LGBT community. Maybe this is what they meant?

In a grand Childress tradition I'll just remind everyone that Avant said Tarvaris Jackson was going to be a hall of fame QB.

As for Vikings supporting LGBT community they should send Michael Sam a bonus for that smack down he laid on Johhny Manziel. Then had the balls to do Johhny's money sign as his sack dance. Hilarious! Our rookie will be brought along and be taught how to play and better yet how to be an NFL player. Meanwhile Johhny Fakeball will be grandstanding until the bus runs over him. I expect a Tebowesque failure out of Manziel.

IF your young WR Patterson develops ( takes that year 1 to year 2 step),you will have not only a great deep threat but that will really round out a threatening offense.
Adian Peterson at RB
Kyle Rudolph at TE
C.Patterson at WR as well as Greg Jennings
Throw in Matt Cassel ( granted hes not a top 10 qb) but is serviceable and certainly has the parts or pieces to have a strong and pretty exciting offensive year
Minn seems to have a strong front 7 year in and out ( You lost Jared Allen,so who knows how much that hurts) but getting your safety back after injury ( the kid from Notre Dame) who was pretty damn impressive before he got injured last year, they maybe better in the secondary as well..
the Vikes remind me a bit of the 08 Packers ( Rodgers first year as a starter)...6-10 but lost a huge number of games by less then a TD, The Vikes record was simular to GB that year and Minn. lost a handful of games by less then a TD and with growth, most or at least some of those games could be turned from losses in 13 to victories in 14..
Thing is MInn. will be a much better team..Det should as well, now that they have real coaching
Chicago and GB both sucked with all the injuries and both should be better then last year ( hard not to) but in the end,i still believe GB is the best team in the division,,fighting for #2 is truly up for grabs ( as long as Rodgers is qb in all more mostly all games,IF he gets injured early,at least Matt Flynn is there already instead of losing 5 games before he gets there,so they could survive it but of Rodgers is healthy all season, im sorry i cant see anybody beating GB for the division yet)

Other preseason trend is injuries. Not for the Vikings but for their opponents. GB is now out Raji at NT and lost their center for 4-6 weeks. Middle man on both sides of the line will lead to less that stellar performance.

With Josh Boyd stepping right in and Michael Pennel has been very solid in camp as well..Losing Raji wont be nearly the problem folks think.
Losing Tretter maybe.Corey Linsley has 2 week and 1 preseason game to be the 1 Center in camp and wont take snaps in a game situation with Rodgers until Seattle unless Rodgers plays some in the KC game on Thursday but its also been written that Linsley has outplayed Tretter at times in camp and the guy did play at Ohio State,so hes played some good competition which couldnt hurt

We'lll see about Raji not nearly be the problem people think. I think runners are going to gash the middle of the Packers D.

Now that preseason is done we can see the final trends. Big one I noticed is that Teddy threw 5 TDs and no picks. He fits well in Norv's scheme.

But he has to wear a glove. Never trush a QB that MUST wear a glove, espcially one with midget hands.

I guess there is a first for everything. Plus he will have to play in quite a few cold games at TFC. TCF is cold! No bay area near by. Frozen and land locked. It makes a differance. I am from there. It is cold and frozen like I have never seen else where. It knocked Favre out and broke his streak. And Favre didn't weear a glove..... just sayin.

Maye they should let him sit until the new stadium is ready!

What I like about coach Z this pre-season, is that he is looking at depth and quality as back-ups. He is not spending time attempting to find if this scheme or the next works.

We all know AP is going to be our RB, and most of us knew that Cassel was going to be the starter. So Z took time to find the quality backup players and hone their skills.

But what I liked the most is, that he did everything completely 180į from what The Fake Vikings Fan would have done. Maybe this will be the ending of "The Curse" that has plagued the Vikings since Brad Childress was our coach!

Part of that curse was Leslie Frazier. A much more likeable person than Childo but his refusal to adapt D to modern game is what held the team back from success. Even the 09 year would have been different without soft cover-2. Everyone focuses on what happened late but reality was Brees was haivng an off game but was still able to pick apart the D and keep moving down the field. If they didn't have cover-2 and played a more adaptive D scheme, Brees would have had a few more disruptions and may not have had 3 TD passes or been able to move down the field for FG in OT.

Childress gets all the heat but Frazier is just as much o blame,.

Frazier had no players to work with either. No MLB which is key for the defense he ran and asswipes like Cook and Robinson as CBs. The best he had for a CB was the rookie Rhodes. Sure Frazier was not great but what did he have to work with?

Good coaches adapt his schemed to the players they have. Bad coaches adapt players to their scheme. It isn't one size fits all.

True.... for the most part, but it has itís limits too.

Many defensive coaches have their own philosophies on how they like to do things and attack the opposing offense.

But if the players mostly all suck ass then it is pretty much a moot point, like if Frazierís case.

With Zimmer they have added pieces that fit "his" new style defense... Joseph, Munnerlyn, and Barr. And let others walk that don't.

You must know Rick and his wife way better than I, and that is why you coatailed this post to include the deceased in your Tebow rant.
Michael Sam is on your fantasy team, no?
Why not? He should have been your first player picked.

Not always, but pretty consistent.
If the scheme is greater than the players, the scheme wins.
The best coaches blend the two.

Manziel in place of Tebow for reference
