In the Tampa 2 you can get by without having great CBs but you should have a MLB and Safties + strong dline of course. The Vikes drafted a stup S last yr in Harrison. If they were able to get another one that would be huge. Otherwise the crappy safety is going to get abused. There are quite a few good safties in this draft, I wouldn't rule that out as an option either.

The Vikes don't only use the Tampa cover 2 on defense There is Single man to man coverage where the cornerback is responsible for a particular receiver assigned to him & Zone coverage & nickel & blitz packages along with the the dime defense. The concepts in the Tampa-2 are simple, and the execution does not require extraordinary talent at every position—the defense stresses good nose tackles and good middle linebackers, and even then, these players do not have the demands that other systems might impose on them. This is why the vikings was able to play Brinkley that wasn't any more then a average MLB & why they didn't care much that he went over to Arizonia.

In Cover 2, the cornerback is usually responsible for "containment". This is where he does not allow anyone to run outside of him (between him and the sideline). He then funnels or jams receivers towards the middle and within five yards, reads the quarterback, and finally drops back to defend the void if there is not a throw to the flat or a running play. a speedy CB is needed & one resson the vikes was so bad in containing the receiver was Winfield was still good stoping the run & short coverage, he couldn't contain the receiver & stay with him like he once did when he was younger.

Anyone that follows college football thought Woods was one of best receivers in college last season right? I got to say the only way I would have thought anyone would say the vikings had a shot at Woods this year was because they thought the vikings was going to have poor season last year, the same kind of season that they had the year before 3-13 & the same goes for Te'o last season before the side show Te'o was projucted to be in the top ten picks, I dont think anyone last season thought Woods or Te'o would fall to late first or second round, so having the "gonads" to say the Vikings would pick one of them to me means they thought the vikings would have one of the the top 10 picks in the draft this year after a losing season & in no way thought they would be picking at 23rd.

Some rumor of us trading down for a WR either Austin or Patterson.
However there are two players that might be worth moving down a bit to get...Sheldon Richardson and Sylvester Williams. If they fall a bit and we only have to move a few spots i.e. 4 or 5 we could give up a third and a fourth and make that move. Trade back with the 25th pick and get a third and move up in the second to take Hopkins, Woods or Hunter and that is a really strong start to the draft.
According to todays newspaper(Wichita Kansas), neither Patterson nor Austin are smart enough to quickly understand and adapt to the NFLs play-book. Neither scored high enough in the Wonderlic test. Patterson had 11, Austin had a 7...meaning they will not be major contributors quickly unless you dumb down the play-book. I can not see Speilman trading up for either WR.
Sheldon Richardson? Viking Update has him going at 14 to Carolina. If he makes it past there, we have a shot.

When MN Safety Smith says Te'o is a good MLB, and he'd be a steal at 23, then Spielman should listen. No way Woods makes it to RD 2. Good post.

Dan Marino and Jim Kelly score a 15 on their wonderlic They were QB leader of their team and hall of fame. Being stupid didn't hurt them. STOP LISTENING TO SPORTS TALK RADIO. It's all hyperbole to get novice fans talking.

I think Te'o played some good ball in college. the only problem I have with Te'o is his speed on sideline to sideline coverage. What do you do if Te'o is there & CB Xavier Rhodes also is there? This very well can happen. myself I would skip on Te'o & take Rhodes.

He's actually responding to my post.Last year around this time,I said we could try for Woods this year.At that time nobody ever mentioned the guy because he was a this year guy.Even when I mentioned him a short while back,he was still under this years radar.Rising fast now though.
Te'o is and has been my 1st round selection at either spot since way back.He was my Heisman candidate as well. When I started this thread that selection was ridiculed,my how times change.

I WISH I could say I remembered your post and was responding to it. Sorry, getting too old to remember some things. None-the-less, I think you show more fore-sight than most. According to the Viking Up-date, the Vikings will be focused on defense, MLB and CB. Woods, while a great pick, IMO, probably won't happen. Could be a smoke-screen. We shall see.

Kansas,
you would be a welcomed addition to the site we all moved to,and there are many of us who did.Unfortunately your not registered,we need that because there is a section for private e-mails.It's how we are communicating the info needed to enter that site.
This is what I think, just about every mock and forum member has us going DT in rd 1.To me rd 1 has to be starters and impact player.I don't see Kwill being benched, despite his probable last season as a Viking,he starts.I'm not sure we'll bench the other DT but I could see both splitting time and drafting a DT.However I see it as more of a next year move.
ILB-we could move a starter from outside to inside.I doubt that.
Wr.can be had later than rd 1,maybe not.
CB-need one but same as receiver.
The Jets and #9 and 13 could prove to be a royal pain in our ass, they will certainly trade at least 1 down for picks.Maybe both.As I said, could be a problem.
Despite the quagmire,I have who I like in the 1st 2 rds.
I'll reveal them Wed.much thought was given,to include the 2014 draft.Plus our De's all hitting free agency, next season.
I have the 3rd on down and will reveal the same on Thurs or Fri.
Frick and frack, our resident members like a Qb.
Hardly.
Not worth discussing, plus they already decided the backup and his backup. Not to mention all these Qb's are bench warmers at best.
And not to mention, next years Qb's are wayyyyyyyyyyyy better.starting with Johnny football and the Bama qb.Ponder will prove himself one way or the other this season,PERIOD.
I could go on,but I have my own forum.
Get yourself registered.I realize you only show up around draft time but try us.
Robert Woods ate the great Seattle CB alive in a 2010 game.Pull it up.
Not saying Woods but maybe I am.
I do know I called his name around here just before our last draft.
And Woods is the class of this receiver draft. Not Austin.Nobody anywhere is saying that.
But I am.

Childress has been consistently wrong since 06 when I took him under my wing teaching him NFL and Vikings football. In 2011 he broke away trying things on his own when he says he discovered Tim Nobody wants him on their football team Tebow and soon to be Matt Cassel's backup Christian Injury Prone Ponder.

That says everything you need to know about the man formerly known as Childress.

He does think highly of himself, maybe just a little conceded you think? I dont see any need to be a braggart. we all had right picks, maybe its because he has been right so few times so now he's boasting.
