Week 12 PFW Players of the Week

Nov. 26, 2007

Offense

QB Brett Favre
Green Bay Packers

At one point, Favre completed 20 consecutive passes and finished the PackersÂ’ Thanksgiving Day win over the Lions with 31-of-41 passing for 381 yards with three touchdowns. He hit Greg Jennings twice for touchdowns and frustrated the Lions after a slow start.

Proball you always are going to have your haters. If I told Jerry that Brett Favre was Green Bay Packer franchise QB and not Bart Starr, that old man would have a heart attack in 1.5 seconds.

He will not allow anyone to be better than Bart Starr. Hence while Brett Favre at 38 is probably the 2nd or 3rd best qb in the league right now, he will only point fingers to the talent supplied around him....

Sometimes people think they know alot about football and will brag about it but when it comes down to it, they don't know too much...much like the author of the article supplied here.

Proball, we basically posted the same stuff to each other from different forums. I'm glad we both can see right through the haters...

we all know jerry was the wrong one...How many times did he say Favre was going to play more games this season like the Philly game?? How many times did we hear him say Favre should hang it up, or that he will throw more interceptions than candles on his bday cake??

Amen! I was rather surprised to read Palantonio's(?) piece. It is wrong clearly, but I agree with you two (Andrew and PB).

Let's try and let the naysayers not bother us!

Good list - Favre most overrated QB of all time for sure.

I disagree w/ Bradshaw as overrated. He was underrated if anything, ran a difficult offense to 4 SB wins.

As far as Stabler and Nammath it's a tough call. Nammath is on almost all of the NFL experts list as most overrated (as Favre is more and more recognized as overrated today). On the other hand Stabler was one of the most accurate passers of all time, had a lot of surrounding talent like Favre.

I agree, as we speak Romo is overrated. Like Favre, he is surrounded by great players and coaches and can't make the tough pass/reads (like Favre). Romo has a chance to step out of this label if he performs in the big games, which Favre historically has not been able to do with such support.

They forgot Joe Montana.
Seriously.

There are a number of factors that added to his career. Here are some I've read over on the 'best qb of all time thread'.

-the 'system' factor. the west coast favored high completion percentage lots of passes to the rb substituting for the run.
-added to this is that the 'west coast' was new and other teams hadn't figured it out yet.
-this was before the salary cap and teams could stockpile talent, which SF did and they had a lot of probowl players throughout Montana's years.

I'm not saying Montana was not talented.
But neither is Favre not talented.
Someone pointed out that Favre has his numbers with not as many probowl players around him and certainly not as many probowl receivers.

That he is a media darling -'good ole boy' and his enthusiasm for the game adds to this, is no doubt. Adding to the mass marketing thing may be that the Packers are a small town, community member owned (as opposed to one greedy owner) team. People like sticking it to the man. What better symbolic way than to like the Packers.(even though in reality the Packers are more of a PR for the 31 other co-owners of the nfl. If we could force them to allow other teams to have Packers style ownership...)

Being a media darling as you put it does not make a QB one of the greatest ever. Also using the fantasy excuse that one QB was surrounded by better players than the other is pure hogwash. A QB who wins games does so because he is on a good or great winning team. There is no other reason.
