What Must Ponder Do in 2013?

It's not a controversial statement to say that Christian Ponder had an up and down 2012 season.

<quoted text>How do you know that?.We'll see what Ponder does this year.Im not saying we had bad recievers but we didnt have the right type.It was like in 2011 when Childress tried to place Percy Harvin on the outside in the West Coast offense. It was a disaster.Having either Jenkins or Aromashodu with Jennings and Patterson and Wright they probably would have been alright but as starters they were pretty easy to guard.Ponder might be awesome this year and Rodgers sucks. Yet to be seen.
It's difficult to know whether the Vikimgs have good receivers or not. As long as Christian Ponder is throwing the ball we may never know. The Colts had good receivers when Manning and Luck were throwing them the ball, but all of their receivers were very average when Kerry Collins, Curtis Painter, and Dan Orlovsky were passing the ball. The same thing with Bronco receivers. They improved quite a bit when Manning replaced Tebow. You can blame Ponder's receivers if you like, but the one thing that won't change is Christian Ponder. Despite your hopes, he will still be Christian Ponder. And despite the Packer receivers, Aaron Rodgers will still be Aaron Rodgers.

What you really need to do is stop buying into the media bullshit about teams needing a great QB. If the Vikings ever put a good enough TEAM together they can win even with Ponder at QB!

<quoted text>thats alright that you pick Rodgers.Thats why this is a discussion panel.I know most would say im nuts but I wouldnt take him because hes had multiple concussions and hes been sacked over 200 times.Plus hes 30.As far as Im concerned 2010 was his best year.Colin Kapernick and Matt Ryan had a higher qb rating last year.Believe it or not Ponder had a higher QB rating last year than.Jay Cutler,Josh Freeman,Andy Dalton,Sam Bradford and Joe Flacco.
Let's not forget that Ponder has Adrian Peterson to hand the ball off to 2 out of every 4 plays. Rodgers has not had that luxury in Green Bay. Having the threat of a running game makes every quarterback better. Hopefully, with this year's draft, that "threat" will make Rodgers an even better QB. Granted, Ponder has not had the receivers that Rodgers has had. But, at the same time, those Packer receivers had to develop into what they have become, arguably one of the top receiving corps in the NFL. Would they be if Ponder were the Packers QB? Highly unlikely. Take Peterson away from the Vikings and force Ponder to throw as much as Rodgers and you have a bottom third of the league QB in Ponder.

I'm not fond of the Vikings, but I kinda like that running back they have. What is his name? LOL

John Elway was a pretty good QB, but he didn't win Championships until Terrel Davis was in the backfield. That wasn't a mere coincidence. As you say, a good ground game makes every QB better. That fact actually makes Rodgers look that much better and Ponder that much worse. The numbers that Ponder had were because he had a running game with him. The numbers that Rodgers had were despite not having a running game. More importantly than aiding some QB stats, a running game helps create wins!

No matter how much you dragged your feet I carried you through the early years of Topix teaching you vikings football from 1969 to present day. Now you comeback and Post Bomb me?

You're on your own. I could care less how much you beg I will never share my thoughts to you on the QB position again. Next time you fall in love with the Tyler Thigpen's of the world I'm going to let you embarrass yourself. I won't come to your assistance to tell you the guy is a lifetime backup.

By your own admission Ponder is sooooooooo "good" that you question whether he is the Vikings QB of the future. It seems that you have made my point for me. Thank you!
Listen genius(by your own admission I may add) football is a game of match-ups......every time the Vikes took the field last year their receivers were mis-matched..and not in the Vikes favor..........Ponder never found a guy he could trust to throw the ball to in critical situations..........yes one can make a case he had Rudolph but I am aiming this point at downfield targets..........Simpson couldn't get any seperation and had nada TD's, he was the Vikes deep threat so to speak.....Harvin got injured but even when he was healthy he was double teamed......plus I believe Harvin is a true slot guy and he never got to be fully utilized there due to noone being able to stretch the field thereby creating a one v one mis-match there..........Rodgers' has the best WR corp in the game, great..........Vikes had the worst..........big difference.........I believe if Ponder get's the support any QB needs in this league with a downfield threat and can attain a trust relationship with Jennings on the field where he can be that go to guy Ponder will be successful..........

Great reply Erie.Say Ive been reading from a couple different places that Urlacher is leaning towards joining the Vikings but it probably wont happen till after June 1 due to salary cap reasons.

Signing Jennings couldn't hurt.Im still looking forward to seeing how that WR from Tenn works out,if it works,Ponder has a pretty solid crew..he and Jennings with Rudolph at TE,but, i think it will take a few seasons for Mr Tenn. to develop but as a kick returner/punt returner,he may make a positive contribution,NOW, will it be enough? we will see, but, Ponder Has yet another year of starting under the belt,SO lets see what he can do.Although a great back, expecting Peterson to run for 2K yards again is unfair to the guy, although not impossible 2K in 16 games,,that's 120-125 per game.
We will see but comparing Ponder to Rodgers is ridiculous at the least.
I completely agree eric..........Patterson may make an immediate splash in the return game....Harvin won a couple games each season it seemed like with his special teams big plays.......this kid has the same potential in that area.......... AND I'M sure the vikes will give him the green light to take it out of the EZ even if it's 8 yds' deep on the kickoff just because he has that big play potential..........

And yet, every time Tom Brady or Peyton Manning or Drew Brees or Aaron Rodgers take the field their receivers are not mismatched. Isn't that kind of a weird coincidence? Believe what you will. Christian Ponder is what he is. No receivers are going to change that. The Packers receiving corp would NOT be considered nearly as good if Christian Ponder was our QB. And again, why do people have to get so wrapped up in the QB thing? Your QB isn't that good. Deal with it. It doesn't mean the Vikings can't be good.

Right now the only chance of that happening appears to be in an Alex Smith sort of way. With a great ground game and great defense Alex Smith could help his team win games. Christian Ponder can be that sort of guy. So don't despair!

He must retire. He stinks. His 4 yard passes won't cut it in the NFL. Without AP this dude would be out of the league. Ponder stinks.

Agree......you got it right when you said it will be after June..........Vikes will look at what they got in camp and then make a more informed decision..........hope he's still around though just in case..........One more point about Ponder then I will put it to bed cause it has been beaten to death so to speak on these boards over the past few months..........Rodgers' backed up Favre for 3-4 years and went 6-10 his first full year..........not comparing the two just sayin'.........this kid was thrown to the wolves immediately..........you gotta give him some time to learn the game, in his case on the job training, he had no time to watch the game from the sidelines and get mentored..........Liked your comment about Lacy morphing into an airplane BTW..........I laughed out loud..........

I do think you have a valid point erie BUT, watching Brett for 3-4 years and going out and doing it are completely different animals, also as Rodgers did go 6-10,well over half of the loses were by 6 pts or less and with a team with 30+ players with 2 years or less, but yea, Ponder was given the job after BF left but he had an established defense,Adrian Peterson behind him,so he had help for sure but as with almost all qb's,it takes a few years to develop and mature into the position
