the tackle position

Why is the offensive tackle position called "tackle"?
They don't tackle anybody.
This is a real and serious (not joke) question.
The center, is obvious -center of the o-line.
The guards, well, they guard the qb.
But the tackle? They don't tackle the qb or anybody.
I asked some coworkers about this and nobody really had an answer.

They are LTs....Left Tackle sounds better than Left Testicle, so Tackle was chosen.

Same thing with the Right side.
