Why do airplane transponders have an 'off switch?'
These didn't.

http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB1000142...

"The first loss of the jet's transponder, which communicates the jet's position, speed and call sign to air traffic control radar, would require disabling a circuit breaker above and behind an overhead panel. Pilots rarely, if ever, need to access the circuit breakers, which are reserved for maintenance personnel.

Pulling one specific circuit breaker, which is labeled, would render inoperative both of the 777's transponders, according to documents reviewed by The Wall Street Journal and bolstered by comments from aviation industry officials and those who have worked with the 777."

Why yes, yes I do ..

"The XB-47, which looked unlike any contemporary bomber, was described by some observers as a "sleek, beautiful outcome that was highly advanced".[17] The 35-degree swept wings were shoulder-mounted, with the twin inboard turbojet engines mounted in neat pods, and the outboard engines tacked under the wings short of the wingtips. With the exception of a change from the shoulder-mounted wing configuration to being under the fuselage, most future airliners would use a similar configuration, with the engines mounted in underwing pylons."

That's a brilliant idea [see: icons].

If you don't take the time to look carefully at some of the good pictures in the link regarding the list of surviving B-47 survivors (the first link), or read most of the full article in the "overview" link for B-47 (the second link):

Take time to look at this photo:

http://www.militaryfactory.com/imageviewer/ac...

If that doesn't work, look at the photo at the top of the related webpage:

http://www.militaryfactory.com/aircraft/detai...

Does either look familiar?[see: photo in the thread NY Daily News article]

Okey-dokey.

I wrote that because of someone's insistence on giving you"Brilliant" icons, and it seemed a good idea to stop.

The photo in the NYC Daily News article associated with this thread is the same one in the militaryfactory.com webpage [in 2 places].

Is that not correct?

Thanks for posting photos of B-47s ...finally; and for a B-777, the type being searched for finding the whereabouts of 239 people.

My part of this thread hi-jacking ends here.

Clicking the 2nd pic from the left in the top row in the B-47 photos link you provided:
http://hk.l.f29.img.vnecdn.net/2013/07/26/boe...

looks like the same pic at one location in the militaryfactory link I found:
http://www.militaryfactory.com/imageviewer/ac...

The photo at the top of this militaryfactory page link looks oh so similar to any others I've discussed:
http://www.militaryfactory.com/aircraft/detai...

There are two photos that undeniably show the *same* aircraft verified by the same tail number, 23363

When you click one of the photos in this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B-47_Stratojet
you get this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:B47E_in_fli...

The tail number is legible and matches that of the photo in the thread news article:
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/world/malaysi...

Am I in the dark? About 2 or 3 posts ago, you could have "saved face" and dropped this, or appropriately expressed " Oh, it seems that I'm [meaning you] mistaken." Whatever it is that prevents this is on you, not me. You claimed that the photo in the news article wasn't a B-47.

I rest my case. I'm done here.

AND this post IS a "gloat post". You've earned it.
