WASHINGTON (AP)— Former President Bill Clinton's 8,300-square-foot Harlem office near the Apollo Theater costs taxpayers nearly $450,000. George W. Bush spends $85,000 on telephone fees, and another $60,000 on travel. Jimmy Carter sends $15,000 worth of postage — all on the government's dime.

The most exclusive club in the world has a similarly exclusive price tag — nearly $3.7 million, according to a new report from the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service. That's how much the federal government spent last year on the four living ex-presidents and one presidential widow.

Topping the list in 2012 was George W. Bush, who got just over $1.3 million last year.

Maybe George should've got an "Obama phone."

Peanuts!

BTW, the so-called "Obama Phone" program began during George Bush's presidency. It's not a government program. It is administered by the telecommunications providers and is funded by the "universal service fee" we all pay on our monthly bill. No tax money! No Obama!

Actually, the only way YOU would pay for the so-called "Obama Phone" is if YOU owned a cell phone company. The Lifeline Assistance Program is a government sponsored program.

Some people believe that the government is using taxpayer’s money to run this program, however this claim is false. The Universal Service Fund (USF), which is administered by the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) along with a private entity known as the Universal Service Administration Company (USAC), pays for the Lifeline Assistance Program.

The Universal Service Fund was created in 1997 by the Federal Communication Commission in order to achieve the goals set forth by Congress under the Telecommunication Act of 1996. According to the Act,“telecommunication service providers are obliged to contribute a portion of their interstate and international telecommunications revenues. These companies include paging service providers, wireless telephone companies, wire-line telephone companies, and Voice over Internet Protocol service providers.”

Not all service providers charge a Universal Service Fee to their customers. Ironic, ain't it? George Bush has a cell phone bill that we all pay for, when he could've got a free one through Lifeline.
