About a week prior to this accident, 7 people died in Cambodia trying to retrieve 75 cents out of a 16 foot well, died from suffocation according to the article linked to the cell phone story. Pretty messed up world when people have so little they'd risk their life for less than what we pay for a cup of coffee.
Kinda puts a perspective on what we call "poor" in this country, doesn't it?

Yes indeed it does Dr. What we call poverty in this country they call middle class in lots of the third world countries.

It's a tragedy, but in this case the phone cost $320 dollars. If you are so poor that you are willing to crawl through sewage to save a phone, it's kinda dumb to drop $320 on a phone in the first place. You can get phones for a lot less than that, even in America.

I think back to my grandma and the stories she told me about the Great Depression and how poor they were and I shake my head. They raised chickens in Chicago. They weren't out buying bling. I think to my mom who said they ate at mcdonalds once or twice the whole time she was growing up, cause they didn't have $ and I shake my head.

A lot of people have their priorities backwards. This seems to not just be an American phenomena.

I couldn't agree more Sublime, I've heard my Grannie tell the same stories of the great depression era, she grew up in East Ky during that period and she always claimed it didn't affect that area as much as the rest of the country as they were dirt poor already, one of her favorite sayings was "You never miss what you never had". She was also very big on the concept of if it isn't worth working for it probably isn't worth having. Priorities have definitely become Bassackwards in this world.

People don't crawl through sewage for contacts, emails, and text messages. Would you? I don't know anyone who would crawl through sewage for that stuff.

everyone has the image that most Chinese are poor... when in fact most Chinese will be middle class or above by 2020

China is already the number 1 luxury market in the world...

with the new riches I notice these Chinese who come into money tend to want to show off their wealth...

ie paying more than even you and I for a foreign car because its not made in China

example

even here where I live? the school which is mostly Chinese immigrants...

the school started a optional music program in grade 3 (mandatory in grade 5)

the music Company that usually supplies music instruments brought 60% used instruments

and 30% new instruments

they of course ran out of the new instruments because the Chinese parents all wanted new instruments for their kids...

the music supplier said they never saw anything like it... especially considering these were grade 3 kids in an optional music program

so yes I believe this woman could afford another phone easily... think about it... in this electronic age... where people live their lives on a gadget...

do you back up your contacts anywhere?

that is what I bet she was thinking....

not im going to use this phone again...

I'm not sure if they are backed up on iCloud. I think they are.

Even if my contacts were not backed up, as much as if had to lose them, I'm not crawling through sewage or wanting anyone else to do so ... just so I don't lose my contacts. Are Chinese less adverse to crawling through raw sewage than pretty much anyone I know? I don't think so.

My contacts are in google gmail contact list. I find it difficult to enter my contacts using cellphone so I enter them in gmail then transfer them to my smart phone. I think most people do the same. Don't know about the Chinese. Maybe they enter Chinese characters differently.

Another thing is that most Chinese love their gadgets in a very strange way. The Chinese family that I know cover their hi-fi loud speakers in plastic bags. Actually, they didn't take the plastic bags out of the speakers when they bought them. Their couch and armchairs are also wrapped in plastic even 2 years after they bought them.
