On this July 4, letís remember our hometown heroes, our first responders and members of the military, who put their lives on the line to defend Americaís freedoms at home and abroad. As we celebrate with family, friends and neighbors, letís also remember the heroes of American history, including those who represent the principles of hope, opportunity and freedom upon which America was founded.

Us Army Sgt. Justin Johnson came home today. Sad day for everyone. Paid my respect by escorting the family to the funeral home. Proud member of the Blue Knights & Patriot Guard Riders. His viewing set for Friday and funeral on Saturday.

This community will NEVER FORGET this Independence Day...he and many others put their lives on the line to defend our freedom.

May you rest in peace Sgt. Justin Johnson.

I started looking up US troop stuff and came across this. I have posted long ago some info and pics of the memorial site but never this footage. Sound is bad, might hear it with headphones.
I was just 20 miles from the crash site that day, could not drive the highway all blocked off of course....248 US soldiers of the 101st Airborne and 8 crew were killed at Gander Newfoundland Dec 12 1985. Coming home from Egypt.

Long ago I know, but I'll never forget it since I was so close to it at the time. All them soldiers were on their way home for Christmas, Gander was the last stop for fuel before just before a short hop to the US.

Was a very sad day in all Newfoundland that day.

I vaguely remember that, It was my sophomore year in high school when that happened. Ironically my father lived in Newfoundland for a while when he was a kid and later served in the 101st airborne during Vietnam.

As long as there not poppy seed, you can fail a wiz quiz with those. Did you see the 'Who killed Uncle Buck' pole, on the Canadian forum? You're listed as one of the suspects, I'm on the top of the list followed by PURLEYCANADIAN. I think it's time to start another Hellwood thread. lol

Your grandfather was in the US military?..or whatever? Just wondering what your father might have been doing in NL as a kid.

There are lots of US military connections to NL especially during WW2 and after. Used to be a USAF base in Stephenville NL and a navy base in Argentia. Couple of navy tragedies like the USS Pollux and USS Truxton during WW2 as well. There was also a USAF B36(know your aircraft?.... massive plane!) that crashed....USAF Brig. Gen Ellsworth was on that flight, based named after him in South Dakota. I've climbed the hills in Burgoynes Cove Newfoundland to the crash site, massive pieces of the wreckage still there and a small memorial.

My grandfather used to work as a cook for the USAF at Stephenville. Too long of a story, but he ended up in Boston(grandparents split up before I was born) and he's buried in Peabody, just outside Boston. I only talked to him one fathers day about 3 yrs before his death. Was kind of strange talking to a grandfather I never met.

Lots of US military history there, I could go on and on..lol
