Nike Factory Strike in Vietnam Settled - for $6 a Month

There are 80 comments on the snafu-ed.blogspot.com story from Apr 2, 2008, titled Nike Factory Strike in Vietnam Settled - for $6 a Month. In it, snafu-ed.blogspot.com reports that:

This is why I rant about how unjust globalization truly is. Not only does the incredibly low labor cost - much of which is due to a lack of oversight in factories - mean that not only do jobs go overseas, the people who get the jobs aren't even paid fair wages. So people who say we are "spreading the wealth" globally are either foolish or lying because they work for a corporation making $$$ off of the arrangement.

Granted, US companies who move/build a factory or
a plant overseas expecting to sell that product
back in the US at a higher profit, or maybe the
pretext to keep costs low?
1) If an American worker is earning, say $10.00
per Hr, then the overseas worker should be paid
the local equivalent.
2) if the american worker gets;medical/dental/401k
housing, social security, etc. whatever?
THEN the company in question must provide those
same benefits to the overseas worker.
3)payraises/promotions based on merit,dedication,
loyalty.
OTHERWISE, that product will not be allowed in
the US.( let them try to get $50 anywhere else )
TRANSLATION; a fair day's wage for a fair day's
work.
There is no pretext. The costs of doing business are simply lower in some countries than in others. As for the price the ultimate consumer pays what other costs are there to get them from Vietnam to the US?

Can't argue that some products from Wal-Mart do tend to be lower quality, and therefore need replacing more often. But many of the products are the exact same as at other retailers, and still cost less at Wal-Mart.
Most don't understand/know where the products come from, as long as they cost less. I would advise people to be careful when shopping at Wal-Mart, or any other retailer; prices at Wal-Mart are often not the least expensive, especially when you take quality into accont.
It depends on what the shopper purchases. Many people do their weekly shopping at Walmart. Toilet paper is toilet paper; same with milk, eggs, bread, etc.

The electronics Walmart has are in many cases the same brand/model in electronics stores. The price is what closes the deal.

Not that I would buy my shoes there....

And also because people fail to recognize that piece of junk they bought for 10% less will fall apart 3x quicker and thus WalMart captures triple the revenue from those fools by selling them two replacements. Buy one good one in the beginning and save money in the long run, not to mention reducing the crap that goes to your landfill.
Hate to tel you this but as I mention else where on these boards my wife from the Philippines and her Sister worked in a factory that made shoes for both Reebok and Walmart. main difference was the logo on the end ( they used same material and workers) and price. Walmart shoes sold for $24.99 and Reeboks $89.99 .

But in the end, it's all about power and money.

And capitolism gone amuc, is just the same, because what you earn or make won't be enough to sustain yourself, so you labour for a zero return, that's just like communism...right?

If you earn (just an example)$500. a month, but it cost you $450. a month to pay all your bills, your really only making $50. a month, the rest your feeding to the corporate stomach.

Basiscally it's like free labour...same thing as communism....

In the end, capitalism is loyal to no persons or nation, the capitalist could live on the moon, and all they would care about is profit from the earthlings...

And no, I'm not talking about the mom and pop stores or small business ventures, I'm talking about the world banks and the dow jones and the people who set oil prices, and control things behind the scenes...

Capitolism only works if inflation is kept under control....other wise capitolism is no different than labour farms...where they hire migrants to work and pay them pennies and keep them indebted indefinatly...

Thing is in socialism all power tends to end up in the power of a few bureaucrats who answer to no one. At least in Capitalism if I dont like the product of company A , I can go to company B .

I think your getting 'capitolism' and 'democracy' mixed up.

You can have democracy without haveing greed run amuc.

And it's not about who you can work for, it's about what you can afford.

When the price of houses and interests rates, and fuel and food and insurance and this and that get to be to much, our money will be useless.

Capitolism can't work without certain controls...
If the price of fuel goes up to $20.00 a gallon, who could afford that?

If the price of a loaf of bread goes up to $10.00 a loaf, who could afford that?

Capitolism, within a democracy, only works if your income is above the cost of living.

believe whatever you want ... but, you're in for some serious disappointment if you stay in the us ... EVEN if obama gets elected, this will STILL be a capitalist country...always was, always will be.

Im not into politics or polititions in no way shape or form,
I form my ideas independently of any political party or anything that goes on in WA DC.

And uncontrolled pricing will destroy this country and bring it down...

Only if you've got money to spend,
You can supply all the goods and services you want, but if we're in an economic depresion, who's going to buy....

The supply demand thing can be applied to labour as well

China supplies cheap labour and goods, and more companies are shifting their industrial base over there....

America will supply and demand itself out of a labour pool if we're not careful...

Capitalism works, but in the end, unless there's checks and balances, it will suck a nation dry....

And again, don't get capitalism and democracy mixed up...

All business leaders know that that their products have to be priced to sale. The leaders of Gm , Sony , Microsoft realize that know if the average Joe cannot afford to buy their product , they are not going to make a profit or stay in business. That business 101 . Might add that the US economy is ran on us buying things we dont need. I mean we now have how many cars per persons? or TVs? We survived thousands of years with out cell phones , IPods , MP3 players or eating out 3 times a week , and if things become rough we could do so again. Nice thing about having a wife from the Philippines is I been to her home and seen how easy it is to survive with out many things we consider essential .
