I been on social security disabilty since 2000. Now I'm 58 and facing homelessness. Have family that won't help. Income not enough to survive on. If paying rent for even just a room, would leave me approximatly $6/day. I called local and state agencies and told they can't help me. Where I live now is full of drug users and those on physch meds. The two that offered me to live with are on physch meds. Home I live in now never was mine, my parents house. Both died. House was done reverse mortgage. Now belongs to bank and they want 90% paid before working out a payback plan. Anyone have suggestions or insight to a course of action?

Seems legit...

Sell the computer =$500

Get rid of WiFi service =$40 a month

Get rid of cable =$100 a month

Take the $640, buy some crack cocaine and make some money.

Move in with Nick Nolte.

Problem solved.

In the ultra-rare, extreme case that this is a legitimate thread, and going against all that is sacred to me - you might want to try this website - that is if you haven't already pawned your computer as I originally suggested.

I was curious and read this and my first thought was:

do NOT post on the Offbeat thread with a real problem.'cause you won't get an answer and the jokes might hurt your feelings.

good on you for sharing a helpful place to seek answers.

DUH!! Got rid of those items 2yrs ago. I'm posting from a prepay cell phone at $55/ month that reduces monthly fee on this plan. I get less than $1000/ month. To pay rent would leave me $300/ month for food. You go do some math to see how your life would be with low S.S. income. I live in one room all winter and heat only that room. Rest of house everything unplugged. No fridge, no microwave,no cable,no newspapers,no new clothes etc. Trying to survive and asking for advice. Not your mean spirited bull.

Check the local papers and see about renting a room. You usually get kitchen space with that, and it is substantially cheaper than normal rent.

Although, I don't spend $300 a month on food, not for just one person.

I think the roommate angle is your best bet.

Try very hard to find a place with two bedrooms and someone else you can live with.....It may be hard, but with hard work and determination you can do it.

A church member referred me to someone also looking for a roommate. He's got a medical device to send pain relief through a tube into him. Has slurred speech. Calls me last night and while I'm talking he ignores me to talk to guests at his current place. I hear the conversations while waiting to be addressed again for 6 minutes! Then says he'll call back and does'nt. Rentals are in shortage here. Very few listed in classified and after dealing with this guy, rather live alone. He has a woman friend and I have to winder why he's moving out from her when they are still a couple.

Right. Look at what I got from millwaukee69. Sarcasm. And the 300 I would have left after paying rent would be $9.66/day. Not including the small electric bill I would also have. One S.S. payment to last 31 days. I don't see that as a high food costs.

First, with paying rent around here at the lowest apt rates would leave me 300. That's $9.67/ day for food. I don't see that as a lot. Only rooms available now are in high crime areas. Chester,Pa. That town listed as the highest in this state. Camden N.J. which is just across the river- highest crime in the nation. Which is why I turned to the forums for advice. Housing is in shortage here. Lots of section 8ers moved in what were residential homes, are 98% rented homes. Stayed here to help my mother who died 17 months ago. And family members did no help for their mother. Just me. So now I'm in this situation.

Kind of interesting that your posting location is showing, given that you a posting from a cell phone. Normally, when posting from a cell phone, one's location does not show, as in a couple of you later posts. The exception to this is when your phone is connected to a wi fi network.

Drawing social security does not prevent one from working, provided that a certain number of hours are not exceeded per month.

Correction. Number of hours worked would not matter, as long as you do not exceed a certain of amount of earnings, one drawing SS can still work.

Type fast? How do you think that? You answering soon enough. I have neuropathy, osteoarthritis, fibromayalgia that slows me down. After typing than I post. Take my time typing and yet still hit keys I don't intend because on this phone letters are close together so I often back up to correct. Those I know type faster than I. One thing you're right about, I'm resourceful with making alterations.

You're assuming medical knowledge of my health. Went through disability tests. Each year worsens. Passed tests of limited endurance. When I get groceries( walk to and from) do house chores, errands, lose control of limbs and dexterity. 12 years after getting S.S., still have bone spurs growing. Even dressing hurts as if my arms are being twisted. Limbs swell. No one to do my chores/errands. So it was either do chores/errands and no endurance to work or go on didability. Not here to be diagnosed. That was done. Here to seek others with advice in similar situations. I loved my job and co-workers. Miss having that life of affording going out with friends. The efforts made to have the nice things in life,to have that retirement after working to have a home. Physical problems halted all that.
