IMO, even that is way too long.
Possibly.

But one day you may need this system, or maybe a relative. It's really easy sometimes to just throw out global statements like that until you're the one standing on the other side of the fence. There is abuse and corruption in every corner of every system ever developed since the dawn of time.

Simply eliminating these programs without considering the whole is ludacris.

I'm not suggesting elimination. But 2 years worth of unemployment benes is ridiculous.

I have been on the other side of the fence. No unemployment benes - I took the first low-paying job I could get, and worked my way back up.

Consequently, drakarnoir wants as much money available to him as possible and, that means taking it away from the poor and their children. darkmeatlover is an idiot.
Its quite possible that someday, you will no longer be a complete imbecile or dooshbag. Highly unlikely, but possible.

My job got outsourced to China in 2007. For the four years following and even while I was getting unemployment, I did work some low paying temporary jobs (and I did report it to the state and they reduced my benefits accordingly when I did work). I ended up eventually taking early retirement at 62 because the job situation was horrible in the county where I reside.

I tell ya, the republicans certainly don't help themselves with women with the house passing a bill limiting abortions the other day ... A bill that will go nowhere.

Abortion is a very complicated issue if you ask people if they oppose abortion, a small majority will say yes. If you ask if it should be outlawed a small majority will say no. Those who oppose abortion do tend to be more passionate about it and it is likely that opposing abortion may possibly give a candidate a slight advantage depending on the demographics of the area. The more liberal Senate will likely stop the bill dead in its tracks anyway, so this will all be a dead issue anyway.

The problem is that the republicans are obsessed about the issue and many women see that and they just completely tune them out. It's also a complete waste of time. Why even vote on a bill that stands no chance in hell of becoming law and can only serve to alienate a key voting constituency.

Many women see that and they think to hell with them. Once that happens it really doesn't matter what else they stand when it comes to these women. Couple that with their flippant attitude towards the environment, and their message about fiscal sustainability and fiscal responsibility is completely drowned out.

Couple all that with the fact that they seemed to give short shrift to the notion of fiscal responsibility when Bush was in power, and it's easy for folks to criticize the party and be cynical about the party. There is plenty of things to criticize.

They really need to figure out what they want to be and what they want their primary message to be and if that's fiscal responsibility (which IMO it should be ... we are a much stronger nation with less debt and everyone will benefit ... to the extent we pay interest on debt that is money that could be spent elsewhere, including on social programs ... it's also something most folks, to the left and the right can agree about, at least in theory), first they need to be true to it, e.g. don't go on binge spending sprees when they are calling the shots like they did when Bush was in power, second they need to be fair about it, e.g. they can't refuse to budge when it comes to stupid tax breaks for oil companies that does nothing to benefit society at large and only serves to help their bottom line, for example, while cutting welfare spending) and thirdly they need to stop with distractions and pushing secondary issues that alienate key voting groups and thus detract from their ability to achieve their primary goal.

Fiscal mismanagement is the biggest threat facing our country and historically it is what has brought most former great powers to their knees. That should be the republican mantra, but they need to be responsible about it.

Down by me, the republicans gained control of the county commission ... they gave schools their 1st funding increase in 5 years (something the previously democrat controlled county commission could not do in 5 years), they gave county employees their first raise in 5 years(something the previously democrat controlled county commission could not do in 5 years), AND they cut county property taxes by about 25%. That's what I'm talking about. That's good responsible government. That's not saying f' the schools, f' the folks who serve the public ... they don't ever need a raise (they have families too and their cost of living has gone up too) and lets go all in for tax breaks...

To me,^^^^^ that's much better than that stupid constitutional amendment passed in my state to outlaw gay marriage, which is an embarrassment, IMO.
