It amazes me when ppl say things like:

"They want Obama b/c of welfare checks" lol

No one Wants a welfare check. It doesn't
even cover the rent much less necessities like
shampoo or tampons.

Ppl are ON welfare b/c they have no other
choices.

And Yes we could get into the argument that they
should have done better in life, shouldn't have
married a loser, should have gotten a better education.
But fact is some ppl don't, can't ....whatever.

Are you really suggesting that we let ppl go

Exactly! How dense does someone have to be to think that, in a nation of 315+ million people, everyone has the same advantages? That's insane! Why isn't Quilter Queen a senator? Why isn't the black man who is driving the UPS truck in the NBA? My neighbor, instead of being short and chubby COULD be Cindy Crawford- IF she would apply herself...We all have the exact same advantages in life and should all be CEO Cindy Crawfords in the NBA and the Senate!!!!!

The fact is this:

Everyone is important.
The lady that serves you your
morning coffee at your local
McDonalds is necessary.

If everyone is a senator, model
or NBA player who is going to
work the service jobs?
And why do service jobs pay so
damn little?
Ppl work a 60 hr work week but
get paid so little that they still
qualify for gov assistance.

Most ppl ON gov assistance work a
full time job and IMO this is a real
problem.

A living wage shouldn't be something
of the past.

I've expressed it before, but it deserves another go 'round:

Your daddy would be proud of that post!:)

BTW, there was an evening news report about a raid in the Northeast that busted 7/11 stores for employing illegal Pakistanis with fake ids -- wonder what kind of "living wage" they were paying?

Hi DW...here, the Pakistanis and other castes from India own the mini-mart franchises and employee their own - hence, the "Apu" jokes. The reality is these men typically work 16 hours a day and sometimes around the clock for minimum wage but more often under the table. They are happy to do so because they are so grateful to be in America, which they call "the land of opportunity." All they do is work and sleep, and send money back home. They rarely seek any form of government assistance.

I understand. Thanks, Barbi.

There's been a documentary film shown on PBS/PBS:World about that Jewish-owned meat packing plant in Iowa that employed so many illegal Hispanics, and the resulting ICE raid. This was a few years ago. Big news splash when it happened.

Absolutely. I am a rural resident myself. It's about time that politicians of both parties acknowledged the existence of rural middle class voters.

That's true of most immigrants but they tend to *hire* family first because they work for free!

I've written this down as a program to watch, DW. I used to watch PBS all the time and should get back to that. Thanks again!

I know, and I have mixed feelings about them.
While they should pay their employment taxes like everyone else, it just seems that these families are something we shouldn't worry too much about right now. At least they're taking care of one another and there is something to be learned from their culture. To name one thing, they take good care of their aged, but that's another topic for another time, I guess.

And Congress doesn't want to pass a min. wage hike saying it will cost jobs when all data says just the opposite...If they paid these ppl a wage they could live on the wouldn't need assistance.

Yeah, and over in the Immigration thread they're all like, "We'll just pay Americans what is a higher, fair wage and they'll work the fields in place of all the immigrants."
