Very interesting for a family connection to history, Paisley.
With a little more research, one might find several random (or are they?) connections in life's web -- an x degrees of separation:
The author of Strange Fruit, inspired by the lynching photograph:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abel_Meeropol
Abel Meeropol (February 10, 1903 - October 30, 1986) was an American writer, teacher[1] and song-writer, best known under his pseudonym Lewis Allan and as the adoptive father of the young sons of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg.[2]
The photographer:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrence_Beitler
Lynching photos were made into postcards to show off civic pride and white supremacy, but the tortured bodies and grotesquely happy crowds ended up angering and revolting as many as they scared. The photo sold thousands of copies, which Beitler stayed up for 10 days and nights printing them.
>>> Every time you hear Bob Dylan’s somewhat hard-to-listen-to Desolation Row, the first line you heard is “They’re selling postcards of the hanging”, inspired by the above photo [no primary source for this though -- but it's plausible: DW]
Thanks for sharing, how interesting. I knew of the circumstances of the lynching, but had never even seen the photograph, and wasn't aware of the connections to Strange Fruit, nor Desolation Row, though familiar with both songs.
Gonna have to ask my grandpa more about that night, while he's still around.

Glad to see you made it one piece Paise.....and what a 'send off' y'all gave this gent.
Thanks so much for sharing.
My friend in the RW lost her husband recently, a truly lovely man, she sent me the
'Order of Service' as the weather was such we could not travel to Lancashire in
time for the funeral, the roads being flooded.
It is quite beautifully done, and has place on my dresser. They chose 'Memories are made
of This' sung by Dean Martin, and 'Softly as I leave you', Frank Sinatra.
It is a hard time for those left behind.
How poignant, those songs for a funeral. The only thing that scares me about getting older, the prospect of becoming a widow. These ladies have been with their husbands much longer than I've been alive; in comparison I've only been with Hubby about 20 years and I couldn't imagine life without my buddy.

I was doing just that last night at my son's home, with my little granddaughter! It's almost terrifying, how much you love them, such a fragile little person in this big scary world...had to stop my thoughts from going there, and just enjoy the moments.
I'm glad you're getting some time with her!

Hi made several posts that seemed to have been deleted ?
Will try to re-post this one first thanks. Rick
Hi all.
I read through the stuff above ,
I have had or at least seen first hand a lot of that behavior throughout the entire U.S. Including most races . & as a Caucasian lived & worked where I WAS the minority .
In the early 80's we were in Elizabeth city N.C.,supposedly MODERN times right? At a general store, gas station/bait shop & a well dressed man in a new Cadillac pulled in to the gas pump.
A scene right out of "Heat of the night" or ? not sure what, but the ole boy sitting in a rocking chair on the porch, stood up ,literally with his lefthand/arm leaning on dbl. barrel shotgun, & in a VERY LOUD drawl, pointed at the man, telling him ,HEY BOY,HEY BOY! "as yu ,as git yo gas ova tha'er" pointing to the station across the highway.
Modern times huh, My friend in out back seat was Puerto Rican & we AND the man in the Caddy left VERY quickly. A VERY enlightening experience.
Have lived in or been in the regions mentioned above too, although "It" may not been discussed openly everywhere ,you still felt it ,several job sites we were on also had that feel.
In the mid west I have lived in many towns that are VERY divided, where they had token family's.
Similar situations still exist around Indian Reservations in this country too. Rick

You have many years together ahead of you Paise....and I apologise for my negative post
of yesterday...
I 'phoned my friend and she is coping well, she has a fantastic family and neighbours
and that has stood her in good stead.
That's all part of the process though isn't, you are born, you live a life, you die.
I recall commiserating with a lady from Pakistan when a huge number of her country folk
were killed in the floods, her calm attitude was inspiring when she said 'we call it a natural
cull'....
Of course that is a different matter, but I think we should all accept death to be inevitable
and to be self sufficient, that is key to survival.

Bit of a culture shock by moving to Wales, I was met with people who refused to
speak to me in English, I was attacked in a remote field walking my little Yorkshire
Terrier, an empty field, no cattle or sheep present, just me in my 40's and three
Nationalists....
I swear they woulda hung me if they could have got away with it.
Now when I explained to the lady who refused to speak to me in English, that my
ancestry was Irish, she replied (in English) then you are my cousin.
To which I replied,'no, I am the very same person I was five minutes ago, when
you took me at face value'.
Since those days I have learnt a lot, and have petitioned for those imprisoned for
attempting to revivie their language, albeit in a dramatic manner, and I can fully understand
their resentment.
Just wish I had stayed at home, lol

why so.. don't sinkholes develop in the sea lol

Y/W Grace. Sinkholes can form in the "seas". See *blue holes* and *cenotes* and the picture of the "Blue Hole" off-shore Belize.

did you happen to see this SUCH a tragedy,

I made a fervent promise .. ages ago, that my dog and my [new born]

It's not fair to the child [stating the blinding obvious..]
and neither is it fair to the dog,
as you have got to 'think' like a dog,
and understand they seldom see a human that size with a high pitched cry,
so, as far as A DOG is concerned, it could be a squeaking rabbit. fox, chicken etc

So sad for ALL concerned.,
