<quoted text>consider this ... they are walking through a neighbourhood for a distance of several blocks. One woudd presume their actions remain somewhat constant if they don't see or encounter people in person, although some might see them at a distane from their porch or looking out their window. Presumably missuss denny Crane was simply hanging out in her yard behaving however she would normally behave.
So as they approach, they would notice her in her yard, and she woudl see them acting as they had been for quite some time before they arrived within her sight. I doubt their actions would have changed once they saw her.

I was surprised at the difference between Toronto and Buffalo

to walk through he worst areas at midnight in Toronto was normal for anyone

it mostly has to do with differences in national histories

I know how you feel. I had a similar incident recently ... The decision maker for a small office building phoned me back the same day that I left a brochure, he asked or a quiet which I sent within a few days .. yet despite all that initial interest he did not yet call back 2 weeks and several messages later ... and I know price was not the issue because I went quite aggresive...

I do get what you're trying to say ... I'm just saying it's not necessarily all that simple.... people just don't smile at two strangers passing by acting thuggish.

further to my point, two thuggish white boys would have received the same reaction as they walked through Denny's neighbourhood.

Here's what a smile got me, lol.

In the early days of knowing P, we were in a self-service
restaurant, P at the counter and myself sitting waiting at
the breakfast bar. Nearby was a Chinese fellow, sitting alone.
There were three diners sitting inbetween this gent and myself.

He apparently misconstrued my greeting, as he gestured holding five fingers in the air in my direction. The other diners looked at him in amazement then to turned in my direction to see my reaction.
I shook my head...he then held up 10 fingers, indicating he was offering me more for my services LOL. All heads turned in my direction. Agan I shook my head, heads turned back to him, bit like a tennis match.

At that point my then BF came waltzing over with a tray of food, and I laughingly told him what had happened....at this point the Chinese chap legged it to the door, ran across the road and jumped on a moving bus...followed by my then boyfriend, who did not have the best of intentions! The restaurant was in an uproar.

We laugh at that looking back....

A smile or a kind gesture DOES go a long way however.

One time in a new neighbourhood, I drove past the local youths sitting aimlessly in the bus shelter, seemed at first glance they glared as I passed.

Luckily my grandson was staying with us, and soon he was kicking a football around with these kids,
they would come around for him...turned out these
kids were just the same as yours and mine, just bored, wary of trangers as I had been of them.

Looking back I know it could have been a different story altogether had I kept them at arm's length, continuing to regard them as the 'enemy'.

I am still in that same neighbourhood..and they still come round, two years ago they dug us out when we were snowbound, those 'dubious looking' boys.
