All of that is very interesting,
'A big Thanks ' for bringing up
some of Offbeat's earlier history.
I was around same time as Vee..
as we're El and FRANKO.
Think that El was part of 'The Mod Squad 'too.
Mightn't be a bad idea to perhaps do
a thread -asking after the welfare
of those mentioned on the threads you
publicised ..

I agree with you which I why I do more reading in my own now. We were somewhat 'cheated' in that I was taught very little about contemporary, 20th century history.

Happeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Wednesday, EL, Grace, Quinn, Tony, Tally, and Franko and newbie Ricky F!!! Pay day, had some running around to do. El, she will be back you cant keep a good woman, uh, GREAT woman down. She would never abandon her own thread. I bet she would even go down with a sinking ship if there was one.(especially if there were cats on board) EL, the picture has gone out to you. Gas has gone back UPPPPPPPPPP 20 cents a gallon.(Last night at work, everyone was being so negative on different subjects) and one of the managers said, "Can anyone say anything positive?" So I said, "I am positive I have a headache." Now everyone laughed. Are things getting worse? Absolutely. Are we going to just lay down by the side of the road and let troubles run us over? Absolutely NOT. People in New York are passing out due to the high temps.(Talk about a way to get some damn free oxygen from those cute EMT's!!!!)I wonder if Mayor Bloomberg is going to do his ranting and raving over the BIG GULP seven-eleven soda that people are drinking to try and stay hydrated.(I bought a little fan at Walmart for $1.50) Called.... O 2 COOL. Works fantastic. Until the batteries die. I carry it everywhere. At that price, stock up on 3 or 4, and dont forget to buy those cool down towels, which lowers body temp 20 degrees. All you do is wet it, and it stays cold for about 6 hours. Great for outdoor chores. I leave for work in one hour. Make it a great evening, too.

Hi there Paisley! Glad you're enjoying life & leisure. I've been watching too many episodes of Discovery ID -- it doesn't seem camping is as 'safe' today as it was back in the '70s or earlier. Too many crazies out there. That's just my take. Plus, ain't no way you're taking my bathroom! I can give up the iPhone and hotel luxuries, but I need my indoor plumbing !
Don't know if/where we'll vacay. Talked about Savannah. I want to take the dogs on a road trip. My old gal is over 15 and I'm not inclined to leave her in a kennel anymore - she's gotten quote ornery, plus it's been at least 7 years since she last boarded. In the meantime I'm enjoying a day here and there and as I've mentioned I enjoy the Chicago Botanic Garden.
My garden has been going fab this year. Looking forward to the goods coming soon. Herbs came out well so I impressed myself. If its green I tend to kill it :(
When out in the back country you're supposed to bury your 'scat' like a cat, well away from water or trails. We take a 5 gallon bucket with no bottom, dig a hole slightly smaller in diameter than the bucket, and place a nice vinyl toilet seat on the top of it once it's over the hole, and viola! lol
Hey don't knock pooing in the middle of a beautiful forest with the birds singing and the wind in the leaves, until you've tried it, ha ha!
Your dogs will sure enjoy the trip, and Savannah sounds wonderful!
My plants and herbs are having a good year too, our region has gotten great rainfall this year, eh?

'Twas very hot and I mean VERY.
I was in a queue with everyone else, when suddenly everything

I pulled myself together lol..
Just wonder can real heat do that?
I intend taking it easy this aftnoon.. Relax a bit.
Yes real heat can do that, I hope you're feeling better now. I would mention to my doctor though, let the MD decide if it warrants further investigation. Bet Ali enjoyed that water!

Hits the nail on the head. Maybe everyone needs a break from time to time.
Hope you're feeling better Tony. Have you skippered the yacht again? Been thinking you might appreciate the Tall Ships that come to Chicago every year.
http://navypier.com/tallshipschicago/
Quite a sight to see.
Skippering is on hold now for about 5 weeks - until the treatment and the after-effects are passed. Finite time now - this has gone on since April, so on the home stretch now.

Notice all the ships in the link except one are US ones - I've competed twice in the European Tall Ships Race and know most of those from this side of the pond, but I'm not familiar with the ones you gave - thanks for that.

Interesting what you wrote about modern history. As you may know - I taught history in high school for 17 years before coming to my present life and it has changed a great deal. I specialised in the Nazis, Stalin and much of the twentieth century, including Vietnam and the Cuban Missile Crisis. When I was at school, they seemed to have the impression that all history ended with the death of Queen Victoria (1901) which I found very frustrating.

Sadly I can't locate the roster of ships that have come in in past years. I was surprised myself to see that the majority are US. I expected other countries to be represented.

I recall you were an HS history teacher. And I see that from a teacher's perspective you also has frustrations with the stagnant curriculum. What was the rationale for this, do you know?

they created the profiles back in the fall of 2006. I first posted in TOPIX in June, 2006 using none-registered names since that is all that was available. ABout 30 regulars posted in Offbeat at the time, of which maybe 10 still post here.
