Armed police are kept to a minimum as they are specialists in this field, releasing the average bobby to handling affairs where it is considered a gun is not necessary.
The theory behind this no doubt, is to prevent accidental shootings.
Police without a weapon is a foreign concept here.

I figured there was a reason behind it. But it is Unfortunate that none were around when those men stabbed the officer.

Another example of differences I guess. I assume perhaps incorrectly that unlike the US there isn't the level of everyday violent gang crime in the UK. What I understand you have is the uncertainty of when the next terrorist attack will occur. Is that even close to accurate?

What you don't have thankfully is a ridiculous second amendment 'right to bear arms' that has been so perverted and distorted everyone and their brother thinks they can pile up an arsenal.

Arm the police not the people.

Always good to see you around..
What do I say? I have always regarded myself as a liberal, in spite of people's expectations because I am ex-commandos. However, I have no liberal reaction to this disgusting act. Firing squad? I would happily pull the trigger.

I am sick of extremism, in any shape or form. But I think there is now a backlash. Like most, I am fully aware that such an act as this in no way reflect the Muslim community of the UK, the vast majority of whom are law-abiding citizens who have no desire to change the liberal democracy we enjoy. Yet, they have consistently done nothing to curb the disaffected youth amongst their ranks. Too many of their community have lived here for years without learning the language. There is no point in anyone with a white skin attempting to have an impact on this - totally futile. The sin the community commits is one of omission, not commission.

Unless the Muslim community is prepared to do more than hand-wringing and declaration of disgust at terrorism, I personally am losing sympathy with them. If there is a backlash, do not expect me to defend any rights they believe they have unless they are prepared to defend my right as a liberal white Anglo-Saxon protestant to live in country based on the laws which that enshrines. Otherwise, watch me with a gun on the barricades.

Sad to hear of the repercussions.

They have gangs in England they just stab you to death. Without the 2nd amendment the rest don't mean squat. Crime is far lower in states that have concealed carry. 17 of the top crime states have strict gun laws and no carry

I think that's a load of hooey Denny and I think you and your NRA compatriots are delusional and distort the bill of rights if you really believe you have some constitutional right to walk around carrying a hidden gun. And for 'you people' to oppose background checks and better gun control is ludicrous.

El .. I read your previous post in other people's replies but did not see the original ...

I have gone through phases where I spent way to much time in TOPIX and then drew back to the point of not posting for weeks at a time. It seems hard to strike a balance. Currently I post in just a few threads, yours being one of them .. and show up every few days. WHen more than 100 posts have been made I just skim over and look for posts that respond directly to me and skip a few ... and live with the fact I don't have the time to read and respond to them all ...

we all go through that EL, so no one will judge you for being frugal with your time.

SO, I hope you take that to heart, post every few days when you get a free 30 minutes, and find a good balance between real life and online life ... I am sure you apply a value to both so just keep it under control.

ANd your remarks are dead on about how the community as a whole seems to be allowing the extremists to do their thing, all the while saying "our religion truly is about peace and good will to others" ... it seems quite the paradox.

However, what can we say when there are neo-nazis, KKK, and other white supremacist groups running around here?

Sorry, Denny, can't let this one go as it is so inaccurate as to come under Disraeli's definition od damn'd lies.

So you walk in fear in the streets of the UK when you visit because you can't carry a gun? I think not. One or two rough areas of London (not the ones where tourists go) have gang problems - which usually means they stab other gang member, not the general public.

As to your statistic about concealed carry and strict gun laws, it is plain wrong. Top most violent states are as follows - the first bracketed figure is the deaths per 100,000 of population, the second is the ranking out of 50 states as to how liberal the gun control laws are - 1 is the most relaxed gun laws, 50 is the most strict:

1. Louisiana (19.9)(23)
2. Mississippi (18.3)(4)
3=. Alaska (17.6)(11)
Alabama (17.6)(27)
5. Arkansas (15.1)(7)
6=. Arizona (15)(1)
New Mexico (15)(6)

You will notice that Connecticut, California, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Hawaii, the states with the strictest gun control laws, feature nowhere in the top 7 most violent states.

Incidently, in 2012 the murder rate in the UK was 1 per 100,000 of population. For 2011, the most recent figure I can find, it was 4.7 - almost 5 times that of the UK.

No problem - I'm starting to feel my age (especially as all the hair has gone temporarily!

Galtieri was Falklands 1982. Don't cry for me Argentina was Eva Peron - same country, but the 1950s - Juan Peron was dead by 1982.

Funnily enough, the vast majority do integrate back in almost seamlessly. That is not to pretend there aren't problems for some: as with any country, a few do struggle. The big difference is that the UK has been all volunteer forces since 1960 - unlike the USA where the draft was necessary for 'Nam. Perhaps that makes it easier - all UK service personnel chose to serve.

As you state Tony, albeit elsewhere, most Muslims come to this country and embrace a peaceful existence, just as all those years ago, Anglo Saxons invaded England, some peacefully, others to fight.
I am asking myself WHY 'they have consistently done nothing to curb the disaffected youth' that needs to be discussed amongst the highest on both sides.
Speaking as a white English born woman of Roman Catholic leanings,
whose rights also I would expect to be acknowledged.
