Wondering what are the thoughts here of
THE BLADE RUNNER/REEVA STEENKAMP
case..
what stunned me is this..
IF Oscar Pistorius
hear some noise that led me to believe it
was a burglar
WHY aim to shoot that person dead????
That makes no sense to us me 'over here'
Aim to threaten YES.. aim to warn..
but SHOOT TO KILL??
beats me..
then, we have no guns over here
to defend ourselves..
and so life is VERY different.
Would LOVE opinions on this..
To me the biggest flaw is ... if you think some intruder has locked themselves in the bathroom, why not say something out loud, weapon in hand to defend yourself ... and wait for a response of some sort? Wouldn't a girlfriend say it was her? Wouldn't he recognise her voice???

This "shoot first, ask questions later" is ridiculous .. at the very least he should go to jail for manslaughter due to gross stupidity in this situation ... no one, even an intruder, had to die.

If there was an intruder he could have said "you say there in the bathroom, I will have my girlfriend call the police. I have a gun pointed at the door, if you attempt to come out I will shoot you."

<quoted text>very true .. I know 3 poeple who saw 2 of the oscar nominess ans they wondered, aside from perhaps cinematography, why the movies were being touted for top honors at all ... can't rememerb th etitles of the movies they were commenting on though.
Just like the movie Zero Dark Thirty won't get awards because it shows water boarding led to getting Osama

YOur answer above leads me to believe that the general public should not have guns in their house, if this is the way things are handled...

You may remember my mentioning our cat Oliver, whilst
still a kitten, was shot just outside his back gate. Five times, left for dead. Survived.
That was done by the well brought up young boy of a neighbour...
who condoned his son's action by covering up.
Now he is of age, no doubt he would be first in the queue if guns were legalised here.

9999!
May we remind you that YOU are also part of the general public? Ergo you just identified yourself as a criminal like rest of us.

he did it. those shots were for her..
nothing he claims makes sense.
I have a theory about all this ..

They say they fonud evidence of steroid use .... what if she was being a goldigger and threatened to publicize his cheating? At the very least maybe she was threatening to break up with him?

They apparently argued loudly for over an hour before the shots were fired ...

again .. this is why I don't think the general populatoin shuold have guns, because of comments like this ...... it turns a theft of a few hundred or thousand dollars of THINGS into a life or death situatoin.

NO one should die over monetary issues ....

I would only shoot of I felt my life was threatened.

We have a right to defend our home and life and a right to keep and bare arms.

Well I wasn't setting myself apart for a minute, but did state

as yet I have not offended.

steroid use was discounted. It was herbal medication. Keep up! lol

What makes you think it is only a monetary issue? Burglars and criminals do commit murder. If the guy has already killed he will surly kill again. If he already has serve two terms and the third term mean life he will kill you. I will defend my life and property

'Assumption' isn't good enough, Denny
what about common dialogue?
ie.
to the burglar
'I have a gun here and if you don't get the *ell
out of my house now -
or give yourself up -
I'll shoot'
that would be 'some' kind of fair chance to give
anyone.
Hope you'll excuse me for saying
NO wonder guns ' been have been' and 'are getting so many
folks into trouble 'over there'
Equally funny....I would have thought it rather foolish to
advertise the fact that one was armed....giving the intruder
the opportunity to shoot first ASSUMING he was armed.

Has anybody considered just locking the intruder in and calling the police?

Rape comes to mind...had it been a genuine intruder, or in
another instance entirely, he could possibly intend to rape
in which case, not only a few dollars at stake.

Mass at the Catholic Church ..

'Life goes on'

We all seem to be judging one person, namely
Oscar Pistorius...can I suggest we put ourselves
in the frame, as to what we would do under such
circumstances, perhaps alone in the house, an
intruder present.
To be honest, I am beginning to see things in
a different light, I am not saying an arsenal
now, but do think a householder should be able
to own a gun for protection.
It seems common sense to me.

Many burglars are very strange and they can escalate to bigger things. If not driven by money they can just like to go through a womans things and they also just like to break things

Ah you have won me over with your argument of a gun for protection :) There is a small town that requires all home owners to have a gun :) Crime is pretty low there

<quoted text>but ..My God, Denny!!!!

Surely life is or [should be]
more precious than that!!!

shoot to KILL?
when the burglar might get a few dollars
for his efforts??

Makes NO sense to me,
yes indeed, to be fair
such a burglar is a bad egg indeed in my opinion
up to no good, and has NO business
brwaking an entering

BUT.........

to kill him/her STONE DEAD???

that is completely uncivilized in 'my' opinion.

What's the point in the law here..
and WHAT role has the law??

and how it should be allowed
deal with such a person in a civilised way?
Not everyone in the US agrees with Texas.
