Tony's right about the poll tax but actually if done properly was a fair tax as everyone contributed, but it wasn't an individual tax in the end as you were liable for your spouse and other bit and bobs in it wasn't right. As for the likes of Blair and that thing he's married to,I just hope what go's round comes round. As for parliament now,I detest all politicians and couldn't careless if another Guy Fawlks came along, the only thing in my opinion this country has got to look up to is her most Britanic Majesty.
I suppose somewhere along the line most politicians may start off with the best of intentions and as time goes by they either get sucked into the high of greed & power, follow bad advice from the wrong people, or succumb to mental illness and they aging process. Maybe even a combination of all three.

If its supposed to be "....of the people, by the people and for the people" I guess sometimes the collective 'people' need to make their voice heard.

<quoted text>Traditionally, local government in the UK is partly funded fron the so-called rates: an annual local charge levied on property: the bigger and more desirable the property, the higher the rates. Pretty fair as those who can afford mansions can afford the rates. The Community Charge (dubbed the Poll Tax) was to replace this with a flat rate per capita charge - thus hitting those worse off hardest. Needless to say, it was dropped and we still have the rates as the local taxation.
Similar to what Obama and Romney, Dems and Republicans have been fighting over here. I have a few chronic medical issues and cannot deduct the amounts I pay out of pocket; those with big money can take greater advantage to find loopholes to deduct vacation properties, luxury expenses, boars, cars, and certain earnings.

<quoted text>We tax on the value of the property here in Texas. We have no state tax so many people are moving from high tax states like California and moving to Texas and Florida . I do like you Vat tax in that everyone pays it. 47% of the people pay no federal income tax at all so they don't care how high the tax rate is. The liberals call for a class warfare and say tax the rich because there are very few rich people and lots of lower and middle class voters. The top 5% pau 95% of the taxes. In California top earners pay 60% of their income. They can cut that about 14% by moving to Texas
Oh Jesus f'ing Christ! Are you on the 47% again Denny? There are a whole lot of hard working people --- elderly, infirm, vets, underemployed -- grossly offended by that characterization and its highly misleading.

http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2012/04/09/4...

What about the corporations that make make obscene profits, send their money overseas and pay no taxes ? That is OK with you?

Combined our joint income has NEVER exceeded $120000 USD annually. I have between $7000 & $10000 in med expenses in any given year. The threshold is 7% for medical but only 2% for miscellaneous. That is ridiculous!

It was only since the RE crash that I was able to deduct ANY of my medical expenses. During that same time, the likes of Romney and Bill Gates & Clinton etc didn't not even have to claim speaking engagement fees - along with other income -- on their tax filings.

The US income tax system is in serious need of overhaul. The system is stacked in favor of the wealthy and if you say otherwise I say you're delusional.

I know my situation and that of some friends, I have friends & family who are small business owners. The 47% you speak of includes them & me because the US government and drafters of the tax code screw us in favor of those with big money.

Well, it seems we can blame Obama over the meteor explosion over Russia! Heck, why stop there... human trafficking in Africa, global warming, dying bats, and the list goes on!
The president is basically a figure head. That is why he has a cabinet of advisors. Now, if you want to lay blame, start with the Congress, the Senate, and other agencies. They were voted in and haven't made a real decision in years!

The USA has rebuilt towns and villages in Afghan provinces only to have them blown up, AGAIN! That is one expensive mission!

My two cents...
Good day to all!

I had a burger recently. After, I could not figure out why I wanted oats, apples, a carrot, and a cube of sugar....

Good morning, Franko ... How are you today? Hope you are well ... Okie dokie over on this side of Texas, lol ... The other worker gave a reason for leaving as "personal reasons" ... she was working "too many hours" in order to qualify for "free medical care" ... The company she's working for does not provide health benefits ... so she has to reduce her hours of working in order to reduce her income to qualify for "free medical care" ... you know, the type the taxpayers pay for? Yep, that kind!!!!! Do Not Get Me Started!... So, I've not seen her since ... I suppose that is her story and she's sticking to it, lol ...

there are pros and cons to everything ...

In a democracy, in theory only laws that make sense get passed ... but in order to get passed, sometimes the ideal has to be adjusted (bastardized?) to suit various opponents who will only then agree to pass it.

<quoted text>Obama is a great politician and a miserable president. He is know for voting present so he is never on the wrong side of an issue. When Bengazi was under attack he told Peneta do do what he had to do and then there was no more contact at all even though the attack lasted 7 hours. Then for 2 weeks he lied to the American people and said it was a spontaneous demonstration over a you tube film. He lied till well after the election. When he was a Senator he said Bush had spent 4 trillion dollars over 8 years. He called it un American and in 4 years he spent 6 trillon dollars. The federal reserve is buying our T bills. We are buying our own debt and printing more and more money. People wonder why gas is so high. A big part is the devaluation of our currency . By law we have to have a budget put forth from the president by a certain time. Obama has never done that and the Democrat controlled senate hasn't put forth a budget in 3 years. The Socialist in Europe have lots of government handouts and high taxes. Our Socialist have lots of government handouts and low taxes. We borrow half of what we spend and neither party want to raise everyones taxes or reduce spending. They want their cake and eat it too
part of the devaluation of a currency happens because other currencies have increased .... the chinese currency MUST rise as chinese products and services become worldwide .... otherwise China will ALWAYS have an unfair advantage ...

So this is part of the natural process of balancing on a world scale .. the USa represents 5% of world population, about 15% of world economy ... and as the world globalizes, the individual influence of the USA will shrink. If INDIA manages to do what China is doing now, their currency will also rise ... their combined population is appraoching 3 Billion ten times the USA ....

The long term effect will be that there will be no advatage to buy internationally or produce products offshore, everyone's currency will be on the same footing ... but that could take half a century.

Hi Franko....

wondering...how much more could the Roayl Princes contribute?

Prince William is employed by the the R.A.F as a helicopter pilot
in Search and Rescue...and expected to fit in public appearances,
while his brother Prince Harry has just finished a tour of Afghanistan.......
More than we can say for the politicians sons.

As the previous government left this country in the
sorry state it was in when this Coalition government took
over. Our countries seem to be running parallel in this
respect.

You too Quincy, have a lovely weekend. It was a most pleasant
