I noticed that to. About two years ago I began a forum inviting anyone and challenging others to see how long on posting civilly. To debate maturely. It lasted longer than expected-3weeks!! of course it the usual way, in 3 weeks.

Is that being used in a derogatory way? or does it have to do with something else like a "STRAIGHT LINE", maybe?
Are you really going to compare the two?
If so......then you really have issues in my opinion......how many straight youths are taking their own lives because they are made fun of for being STRAIGHT?
That's extremely gay.

There is nothing wrong with gay people. They are people. It's wrong when they try to act like they are hetero to fool others that they know are straight into situations.

Why do folks truly think it's okay to say, "That's so Gay"?
Would it be okay to say, "That's so Black"? or something else that can be derogatory towards others?
Regardless of why it's said.......It's wrong to say it.......GLBTQI youth's are being bullied with crap like this and they end of taking their own life all because they don't know that one day they will get pass this sort of garbage.
Think about how you would feel is someone made some comment about you, your family or your heritage that made you feel bad, then think how you still feel after an apology was made.....just because we apology, doesn't me the hurt feelings go away!!!
Remember that the person you may say this to one day could be related to you and it was the final straw and they take their life......how would you feel then?
I agree,
and .. on Your behalf I regret this thread,
as I know you are in a same sex relationship,
with Mrs Whitewater, you were quite
open about it and shared with us here,
which is very refreshing ... and so, this kind of thing
must be hurtful to see written down.

Thank you for your comment and I'm sorry that I am responding so late........some think what they say is funny, others want to take the "HOW DARE YOU" approach, still others will take the homophobic approach........but none of them will realize that those approaches are nothing more than showing others who they are, but at the same time would be screaming bloody murder if Gays and Lesbians or others gave them the same treatment they feel perfectly okay to dish out.

Frankly, these comments just show me how childish they are when hiding behind a monitor!!!

Peace:-)

I don't see why so many people cannot understand that words have multiple meanings and why they cannot choose to avoid being offended. Being able to make fun of one's own group is a hallmark of mental health.

Of course, I tend to take things more literally than others, so if someone talked about a "gay computer," I'd be expecting to see another computer of the same type on top of it. Likewise, if someone called a movie "gay," I'd assume they just watched Brokeback Mountain or similar.

I suppose that's true,
re multiple meanings,
problem is, with regard to the
word 'gay' and it's uses,
it's most always meant in a derogatory way..

ie

'a gay computer'

is meant to convey

'A computer that doesn't work properly'

I think it is possible to have the orientation definition and the derogatory one without one impacting the other. It is just that people on the other political side from me are not able to keep things as compartmentalized. I just think more people need to grow up, realize everyone doesn't like them, and realize that words are just words. If people can learn not to read negative things into words, then where would the harm be?

I've been called orientation slurs before for no reason. I used to be all bent out of shape over that. But I learned how to distance myself from them. Think about it if ****** is not your given name, then why turn when you hear it? They must be talking to some imaginary person named ******, and if they are, then they are not talking to me. But I don't apply that to every encounter like that like I probably should.

Good for you to have devised a way
to distance yourself from
such comments..

indeed.. like the old saying -

but words will never hurt me'
