So, enough good voters in this week's Boston mayoral election made David Ortiz the 3rd highest vote total ... as a write-in candidate.

MLB Managers of the Year announcements.

I'm cool with that.

Terry Francona, Cleveland Indians. From the disaster at Beantown in prior season(s) after winning 2 WS there. Quipped while the Indians were scrapping to qualify for post-season "We stayed away from chicken and beer [in the club-house]"

Clint Hurdle, Pittsburgh Pirates. good on him!

I concur. Two very nice turnarounds.

I screwed up the Francona quote/paraphrase I fear. It was probably fried chicken.

Expanded re-play is here:

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/baseball-move-ah...

in part:

Now, virtually every decision likely will be subject to review, except balls and strikes, checked swings and some foul tips.

''Tag plays, out/safe at first, fair/foul past the bags, those are all going to be included,'' said Rob Manfred, MLB's chief operating officer.

So no more blown calls, like Don Denkinger's at first base that turned Game 6 of the 1985 World Series or Jim Joyce's bad decision at first base that cost Detroit's Armando Galarraga a perfect game in 2010.

''We want to get more plays right, the ones that matter,'' Manfred said.

I think there was more in play here, and it ain't funny:

.. that baseball manager Danny Shay was acquitted of murder after shooting a man in an argument over some sugar?

... that the 1907 film How Brown Saw the Baseball Game, about a very drunk man watching a baseball game, used trick photography to show players running in reverse?

Recommendation by the competition committee for formal approval by MLB and Players Assoc.

Maybe MLB catchers should pad up like collegiate lacrosse players?!

I have a better idea. Lets just put skirts on everyone. I don't like this rule.

This will be extremely tricky. I think catchers are entitled to their area in guarding the plate, and the runner should be able to be somewhat 'disruptive' in a play at the plate.
How do you properly determine what's designed strictly to jar the ball loose from the catcher, rather than just incidental contact?
Having said that, I can recall in an All-Star game years ago, when Pete Rose deliberately steamrollered Indians' catcher Ray Fosse, and Fosse was never the same after that. That kind of play is way out of line.

Slidin' ain't sissy. Sliding rules are in place and enforced at several levels in competitive baseball.

Even without steriods and other performance enhancement drugs, ball players do tend to be faster, stronger like in NFL and NBA.

Headgear has been used for years now in the NHL.

I read several comments with that article. One doofus suggested use of aluminum bats. Sure! That would eliminate broken bats!!

True, it could be a tricky call; much like the NFL is enduring trying to deal with chronic head trauma and seeing more knee injuries.

Not to be forgotten is the monetary investments all around. Like the NFL, I'm sure MLB and Players Assoc. considers that.
