Left-Lane Slowpokes May Be Georgia's Newest Criminals

There are 103 comments on the WONE-AM Dayton story from Mar 12, 2014, titled Left-Lane Slowpokes May Be Georgia's Newest Criminals. In it, WONE-AM Dayton reports that:

If you've ever been stuck behind a person driving too slowly in the fast lane, the Georgia Legislature is here for you: Its "slowpoke" bill would require anyone driving on a divided highway to move to the right when a faster car approaches from behind - even if the "slowpoke" is actually going the speed limit.

Most don't realize that these disgruntled slowpokes are the origins of every daily traffic jam across the planet. Inept drivers sap the strength of others.

When someone comes up on me and I am going the speed limit, I slow down and turn on my right blinker. I then move over into the right hand lane when it is safe to do so. Sometimes it is a few miles before it is safe to do so since lots of people move over into the right hand land when i do this. Then they get pissed if I try and speed things up by returning to the speed limit if I cannot safely make it over to the right hand lane.

LOL, Georgia is passing a law that basically means that if one person is driving in the left lane a person who is violating the law by speeding and quite possibly a second law by tailgating, they can define the other driver as the violator by merely stepping on their gas pedal? That law won't get enforced but at certain times of the day when police are allocated to look for such a thing.
The whole key here is to SLOW DOWN and signal your intention to change lanes. Only change lanes when it is safe to do so. If the speeder has to follow you for a few miles, that isn't your fault, now is it?

I say take time to slow down and smell the roses, even if you are in the left lane.

Since when is the left lane a fast lane anyway? It never was meant to be a fast lane. I always stay in the right lane, until I get close to my exit, then I go over to the left lane. Or I get over to the left lane to let someone in from an exit, or slow down and stay in the right lane to let them in.

Just ride my tail while honking your horn, and I'll ease on over into the right hand lane eventually when it's clear.
I like your thinking, Justin.

Effectively, with this law, Georgia has sanctioned road rage and legitimized violation of speed laws. Most likely because Georgia cannot afford the cost of enforcing the speed limit it originally imposed. This is much like the Obama administration endorsing illegal aliens instead of enforcing existing laws.

I don't know if it's that exactly. I'm going to take a guess and think it might work like this.
If you are in the left lane and someone is speeding and tailgating you and it turns into a major accident you both will have charges. Basically because you stubbornly staying in the left lane under the notion of I'm right so screw you I'm not moving increases the risk of the speeding offender causing an accident. By not pulling over to the right you are increasing the chances of an accident involving not just you and the speeder but others near you on the road. I think the idea is it is safer for all on the road to allow the speeder to move past the group of traffic. It might be safer for all to let the speeder get the hell away from everybody and be alone when he passes that radar cop down the highway.
I'm guessing it you won't face charges unless you are part of a multi-car pileup because you didn't let the offender pass.
Just a thought.....

The gist of the law is you have to let speeders by, BUT you cannot speed yourself. That means that you HAVE to slow down to be able to move into the right lane since legally you are not allowed to speed up. You have to then wait until it is safe to move over into the right lane. Of course this means that the right hand lane is now moving faster than the left hand lane. The speeder, who cares nothing about safety or law by virtue of their actions, will then move over into the right hand lane to pass. What will often follow is that the original left hand driver who is no longer obligated to move over will speed up to his original speed. This will go over real big with truckers, especially when driving on the Interstates in the mountains.

Yeah- this law makes a lot of sense to me. I have been driving for 43 years now and can only remember one time where this was a significant issue. Some dolt from Ontario was driving a camper in the left hand lane and was pacing a truck in the right hand lane. Thus went on for about 20 miles. Other than that the situation has resolved itself within a few miles. What they should do is enforce the laws that they already have on the books regarding speeding and aggressive driving,

I'm not saying it will work or not or commenting on the value of it. Just pointing out what the idea might be.
They most likely will continue to enforce the speeding laws. I doubt the intentions are what your saying. I'm guessing the idea is to get the speeder away from others until they hit a radar patrol. I already do this. I always get out of the way of a tailgater or someone barreling down the highway towards me. I want them to pass me and take their recklessness down the road instead of next to me and the others.

To all you "Left Lane Dicks" who like to take refuge in the fact that you are doing the speed limit, I suppose you get out of the way of emergency vehicles? No one is "screwing around" with you because they just want to go faster. There's a reason behind it. How do you know whether or not the guy's a volunteer Fireman and he's driving his wife's car with no blue light? The incident I described before was a true one. It happened to a friend of mine. His throat was beginning to close up from the bee venom. He had a real emergency, but the O.F.(Old Fart) in front of him just wasn't going to let him pass. So the old excuse "I'm doing the limit, what more do you want?" We want you to get the hell out of the way! I hope this law passes and is enforced!

I guess the bee sting guy will just die if he is behind me. There is a reason for the speed limit laws. If you want to drive faster, ask you lawmaker to raise the speed limit. It does not get any simpler than that.

In other words, since the state cant enforce it's speed limit laws, it's going to place the burden of appeasement on the other motorists who do obey the laws. Much the same as legalizing 12-24 million illegals appeases illegal aliens rather than burden the government in enforcing the law.

LOL, now you're trying to use some straw man argument about the right of way of emergency vehicles who are properly marked and using aural and visual signals typically associated with AUTHORIZED emergency vehicles in comparison with speeders. LOL. You might as well argue that crack should be legal because many in your family use and doctors write prescriptions for drugs as the reason.

Our state has a drive right law. However, that law doesn't give a speeder any new rights. Your house bill is too complex and has too many exceptions to it to make it almost unenforceable. At best, the layperson will be confused into believing they are an "EMERGENCY VEHICLE" and possess the power to ram others out of their way by merely becoming faster than the other driver.

On the beltway, I have an off ramp that exits to another highway from the left lane. I drive the speed limit exactly, I set my cruise by GPS. You should see the idiots become uncunted when I merge left from the far right lane, to the center lane, take the far left lane about 1-2 miles out and drive the limit. It's not a new off ramp, it's been there fore decades, yet they honk, flash lights, hang the bird out of the window, yell and scream with their heads out the window. You should see the look on their face when I smile and wave back at them as if I was just seeing an old neighbor driving past, the aggressive driving road ragers just about go blank for the moment. It's hilarious. I'm not going to lie, I've sped, gotten traffic tickets, but now that I've spent years setting my cruise to the limit, both in town and on the interstate, I've come to view speeders as people who have affairs on their spouses, lie on job applications, cheat, steal, take things home from work that don't belong to them, etc., etc., etc. It makes sense to me now that people who are consistent and persistent traffic law violators, most likely cannot be trusted to not steal or lie.
