Spineless Wimpy Parents

United States

#1 Sep 2, 2013
Here I am sipping a coffee in a wifi coffee shop. I'm off of work today and thought enjoying a peaceful cup of joe would be a pleasant late morning activity.

I should've known better. From plenty of previous experience.

A few minutes ago yet another spineless parent arrived with two loud, bratty, out-of-control whelps. Spineless Mom keeps scraping back her chair repeatedly as she pops up to chase around Brat #1. She deposits Brat #1 back into his chair for the umpteenth time and once again coos a useless, "sit down or mommy will take away your cupcake". Once again Brat #1 shrieks defiantly, jumps from his chair and runs wild around our tables, followed by the annoying scrape of moms chair just before Brat 1 is chased down and returned to the table kicking and screaming, and yet again soothingly told he will lose his cupcake (which by now he surely knows is not going to happen).

There goes Brat 1 running away again while Brat 2 has thrown napkins all over the floor and has just jumped off her chair to go over and grab a plastic travel mug from a display, knocking several others clattering to the ground. She is now loudly begging Spineless Mom, who is again chasing Brat 1 around the place, to buy her the plastic cup. Spineless Mom coos "no Honey" repeatedly while Brat 2 screams and cries, "I want it! I want it!".

This farce has continued for nearly 15 minutes. Mother is still uselessly begging her whelps to stay seated.

What do we know from this scene?

1. That cooing and begging so-called commands go unheeded.

2.Empty threats are useless.

3. Spineless Mom is too stupid to show the rest of us some consideration and take her brats out of here and home.

4. People can't go anywhere in public without having to contend with undisciplined little monster brats.

5. It's embarrassing to watch grown adults prostrate themselves at the feet of their own toddlers.

Enough already! Parents grow back your spines!!

Your children need teaching and discipline NOT begging and cooing! Are your children supposed to respect you for being a spineless doormat??

I agree with you. The management of these places has to take a bigger role in maintaining a pleasant atmosphere for all paying customers. I've seen that very same scenario play out in places where I go...a dozen quiet patrons subjected to one person's wild kids. In that case what becomes more important? Ensuring a pleasant environment for the dozen behaved patrons or worrying about offending the one thoughtless disruptive patron?

Damned if ya do, damned if ya don't. Don't discipline them and they run amok, discipline them and risk someone calling CPS on you for child abuse.

We had to allow the Parents to do this...if we did it...they would go to management...and then we would be in trouble...it wasn't fun.

It's just not easy working with the public..
