Following the pitiful incident in which our dear friend Isaiah Lerner attacked and killed a dog and later committed suicide, ruthless verbal attacks have appeared in the press and in different social media communications directed against him and his family. Not even in one of these instances, especially in the written press and television reports, has anybody asked: Who was the person who committed such an act? Had he done something similar before? Was he a violent person? Was he a person who hated animals? Nobody asked. Nobody seemed to care.
We have no doubt that the act itself has no defense, but we do not find an explanation for it, because the Isaiah we knew from our pre-school days until the day he killed himself was a loving person, always concerned for others, generous; he was the person who walked the extra mile to help those in need. In the Memorial held in his honor the group present had only one thing in common, and that was to have been part of a piece of Isaiah’s life. All of us praised him for his friendship, generosity, affection, love, dedication to his profession, and also expressed horror and surprise at the events preceding his demise. Our friend was much more than what described in the press, the television and the Internet, and we want that to appear as well in his life history. We will never know what were Isaiah’s thoughts the last days of his life, what happened to him, but our experiences must be included to give a balance in the story of who he was.
God Bless
