It seems to work until the little buggers get scheming of their own...(usually at around 4-5yrs) and any advantage is lost and it all turns to a battle of ~~~~WITS~~~

Something that can be "sweet" when the Band Aerosmith is singing about it...but can cause rational people to make bad decisions when it gets the best of them..

Did you just answer yourself there?

And the idea of Federal supremacy versus the States was argued quite a bit around 250 years ago. The Articles of Confederation giving more power to the states failed in less than a generation. And the idea failed even harder less than a hundred years later, resulting in the US Civil War.

The idea of US State's supremacy can be seen now - in Europe. Having a common currency under a federation of states (nations) is extremely tricky.

Should the EU kick out Greece for its poor policies and behavior of its citizens?

If you think so, then the US should be able to kick out poor performing states, right?

History.

Well, wouldn't say predictor. Repeating the same mistakes of the past praying the outcome will be different -this time-....

Knowledge - things learned.

My grandparents had an entire set of Encyclopedia Britannica books from the 1930's. What was knowledge at that time had changed quite a bit in just 50 or 60 years but some parts did not.

They also had a globe of the world showing the national boundaries between WW1 and WW2.

That was what they knew at the time.

Discovery.
