this.

long ago, I remember driving with a can of beer between my legs...no one really thought about it in those days (yes, I am old)

now,
there is no way in hell I would even think about getting behind the wheel with any alcohol on board.

Indeed. Times have changed, for the better in that regard I think.
Back about 15-20 years ago, my thing was to get liquored up, grab a couple for the road and head out onto the dark, lonely roads in the coast range in one of my hot rods.

One night I was out in my 67 GTO, driving that 4 speed like there was no tomorrow when I came around a tight corner and there were emergency vehicles everywhere. I immediately took my open beer and set it between the seat and the door as one of the responders came up to the car with a flashlight.

I said, "Looks bad." And he replied, "Yep, three kids and they're all dead. You'll need to turn around and go back the way you came."

So there I was, drunker than four people doing a multi-point turn on this narrow country road in a long-azz car, surrounded by cops and EMTs.

Turns out the kids had been drinking.

Ugh....

No, but I've driven blind (night vision goggles, no ambient light, middle of a desert) I couldn't see jacksh!t, driving a 28 ton tracked vehicle. My gunner at the time said that it was so foggy during a REFORGER exercise in the '80s that he drove his tracked ammo vehicle over a brand new Mercedes. Luckily no one was in it.

Dude, you went to REFORGER??

Been there, done that! In around 85 and 86, we provided support at the Fulda Gap. I was in HHC, 547th Eng Bn Cbt in Darmstadt.

While we were already in Germany, since our unit was part of the mission at Fulda, we got involved every year. It was great getting together with guys from units from "back in the world" as we would say.

Oh yes.. yes I have...in the late 70's and 80's...
Thank The Powers That Be... My car knew the way home... because back in the day...
My motto was 24 Hours in a Day... 24 Beers in a case... Coincidence? I Think Not!...
Been sober for 13 years now... not saying I can't have a beer or two if I want to.. it's just real rare for me to want to drink at all..

I'm so proud of myself - I got drunk at the bar last night and decided I was too drunk to drive my car home so I took the bus. I'm so proud of myself since I've never driven a bus before.

We were scheduled for '88, but the scrapped it. I went active duty in early '90, just before Saddam invaded Kuwait, so I got to go play with artillery in the desert with The First Infantry Division. Heard many stories from the old timers about REFORGER antics, most were hilarious.

Thanks. I haven't had a soda in a couple years now. Drink a barley treat once in a while.

people who have fallen asleep
and crashed is up there in the high numbers.

I think we all had our dumb times.I know I did and most was as a teenager. The older ones always bought the booze and got us into the night clubs.I was doing this at age 16.You're suppose to be 21.I even remember buying the booze once at 16 in a city I onced lived. But the bootleg joints where I'm from..no problem if they knew you.Got it there also.
