Did you speak the local language or could you get by with English?

Apologies for the inquisition here.

I'm getting to the point where I want to travel abroad and want to hear other's experiences.

Brazil was interesting. Stayed 2 nights in Salvador, Brazil. Then 3 nights in Rio then 2 nights in Manaus which is on the Amazon. No, I don't speak Portuguese. The food, especially the beef was astounding. Visited many Churrascarias which are steak houses. Impanema Beach and all the tangas were spectacular of course but climbing to the top of the Christ the Redeemer statue that overlooks Rio was amazing. I'm sure you've seen it on TV and the movies. Incredible. I've been around the world but that was one of the best places I've experienced. I still want to get back to St Thomas in the Virgin Islands though.

Wife and I palmed off the kids with grandparents, and flew from northwest corner of the US to Tahiti. Got a killer bargain on a two-week cruise, so we saw Bora Bora, in and out of the islands then the final three days at a completely lovely hotel in Papeete. Was a completely cool trip!

I suppose its fair that, since I initiated the poll, I should also vote.

Set foot in 47 states - Missing Alaska, North Dakota and Nebraska.

Canada a few times - Whistler/Blackcomb for skiing, Canadian side of Niagara Falls a few times, ferry from Ohio to Canada and drive back to said Falls. Another skiing trip (long weekend) to Tremblant that, in hindsight, was tragically funny.

A day trip to Tijuana when I was on a family trip at 14. The cab driver was quite memorable in his friendliness and enthusiasm (even if he took the long way...)

And the most memorable was being 30 day deployed to Saudi Arabia for the first time. Culture shock big time but I could get by with English.

So International, English OK for me.

we got the traveling bug when our youngest graduated. so that's been 10 yrs now and we've gone pretty far. most all were done on a cruise, because its the most affordable and its nice but u don't see as much as u may if u were to do the places on ur own.

Europe - Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, England, Turkey, Greece

Alaska
Canada
Mexico
different places in the Carribean

I actually haven't seen much of the USA - lol

hopefully when we retire we'll get to do more of that....

I am a Midwest (IN) to coast (vice-versa) vote. The second farthest trip was to Moscow, ID by way of Spokane WA through Pullman. No, of course that's not on the coast.

The farthest trip was to Seattle, WA to visit the same folk about 2 years later, after they moved.

I pretty much handled the local language each trip.

I was born and raised in Vermont, my first road trip was to Denver, then back to New England - Maine, NH and I loved Cape Cod.

I lived in Alaska for two years, first in Fairbanks (half year) and Anchorage rest of the time. I would like to return to explore more and I would also like to drive it this time.

Up and down East Coast many times, Florida (15 yrs), Tuscon, AZ for a time and outside Atlanta, GA for a couple years before I came here to Southeast (eastbumduck) Misery. Ooops! Missouri. I drove so of course I spent some time in many states in between all these.

Soon I'll travel again to another place. I'm thinking California is a must and if I have to choose between Alaska and Hawaii, well I'm not going to need long johns.
