I always like the idea of pets for the elderly - they always seem to enjoy each other's company.

Just sayin'...

An old school record player and an organized collection of their most favorite artists. Nothing beats that grainy true sound of vinyl.

Mow their lawn, rake the leaves, shovel the snow. If it's icy out, call them and see if there's anything they need from the store. Deliver it for them and salt the steps and sidewalk for them.

Check their furnace filters. Check their house for drafts and seal up any place that needs it. Clean their guttering. On your way to work, you could stop by and move their trash dumpster out to the curb on trash day. Walk their dog. Then go in, make them a cup of tea and just visit. You might learn a lot.

Well I'm big on helping the vets as a former military man myself I think anything we can do for them is a plus. Maybe a day with their family out to dinner something like that.

What about a regular magnifying glass ( e.g. http://www.magnitool.com )? If it's given with the right mind it should be a tool for exploration rather than just reading the small print (though very useful for that too!).

Or another option (yet riskier) would be to give something like a business card holder ( e.g. http://www.cardcaseshop.com ) if the person might get a boost in confidence and and start meeting people again through a small business or other activity like that.

Safety first?

1. A good and sturdy flashlight for every room.
2. Battery operated track lights run along the base boards to the exits of the house.
3. Check and replace all fire alarms and co detectors in every room.
4. A small all purpose fire extinguisher for every room.
5. Glow in the dark solar lights near every outdoor exit.
6. Check and make sure there is at least one window exit that can be opened easily in rooms without an outside door.
7. Install non-skid bath flooring and hand grips mounted in the shower or tub.
(The soap dish handle is not strong and can be pulled loose from the wall)
8. Set all phones with your #'s and 911 on speed dial.
9. Arrange for someone to call and do a well check on them everyday. Arrange to have a safe word they can use if there is an intruder.
10. Love them. Tell them you love them everyday.
Listen to them and record the story's they tell you about their life.

A roomba! It vacuums the house, hard floors and carpet! It can also be preset to vacuum everyday, when done, it returns to base to charge!
