Once a week do a manicure, and also Polish her fingernails with Pretty Colors..I am talking about a Elderly woman friend, you have a close connection with,, [BUT not a pedicure.. because Many of the Homebound Elderly Women have some feet issues,, and dont want their feet touched.. and for that unique elderly man,, Polish his nails with clear.. Might make HIM feel good..

Depending on the clarity of his/her
mind, and the person's physical ability -
I think an 1Pad would be the perfect gift,

will keep them occupied for ages,
limitless - it's like
several gifts all rolled into one

[I think]

A "Gift certificate" of your time for a weekly lunch, movie or shopping date.

If they are unable to leave the house at all, then offer to go shopping for them with their grocery lists.

A nice gift would be a small tv top DVD player and a subscription to a mail order movie service.

I would get flameless candles. I have given them out as gifts, not just for elderly and housebound since I never want anyone to forget to blow out the real thing. They also smell fantastic. (QVC has them, with great prices and I would also get a few grabbers, they have an extention pole to reach up high and claws to grab what you need, (also made for short people)

Spend time with them
Take them some place
Make them a meal or two
Help handicap their home to make it easier for them to get around

It's always the small things that don't cost much thats appreciated!
