  • It is extremely disrespectful and tasteless

Jazzing up the National Anthem simply reduces it to just another song by pop singers when they sing it in the same manner as they would an under in the bed love song. It also draws the attention away form the flag that represents our great nation and gives all the attention to the singer.

Here are some of the better renditions:

http://www.youtube.com/watch...
http://www.youtube.com/watch...

And here are some of the worst:
http://www.youtube.com/watch...
http://www.youtube.com/watch...
http://www.youtube.com/watch...

The first three were good clean renditions devoid of the unnecessary nonsense while the last 3 were disrespectfully jazzed up.

along the same idea....
I find it annoying when every singer feels it necessary to put out an album of their rendition of Christmas carols

having admitted to being an oldster now, and unable to accept any new version...I shall shrink off

(but I really do find it a bit annoying, as most are not as good)

I've always said it's not YOUR song and it's not a concert.

So don't sing it the way YOU want to or the way you think best shows off your talents, sing it the way it was written to be sung.

Oh, and it was written with every note that's required to sing it, no need to add more.

I like the Christmas caroles that are left classic.. if they sing them and leave them classic.. its all good...
The national anthem,,
they are probably jazzing it up so they can give it their own twist..that way they stand in less danger of botching it up..
no one is ever gonna sing it like Whitney... best to change it up or lip sync..lo

Some artists sing the serious Christmas carols irreverently and there are also those who don't believe in the New Testament who decide to make Christmas albums anyway. I am in agreement with you here.

Excellent point! The rendition of the National Anthem at the Super Bowl yesterday was another disrespectful clunker.

Bobby Vinton at least apparently tried to sing it respectfully, but Christina Aguilera's version not only flubbed one line, but it also had a lot of unnecessary variations and extra notes that detracted from the majesty of our National Anthem. Perhaps if she has simply sing it as written, she might had been less likely to make the mistake.

She could have dressed more respectfully for the occasion instead of looking like she was headed to the gym. She also took the liberty to sing it in 4/4 time instead of the more traditional 3/4 time. At least Christina Aguilera has the sense to dress respectfully when she made her botched and over done rendition of it.

It needs some jazzing up, it's probably one of the worst pieces of music ever composed.

Canada's is worse. The old Soviet anthem was a beautiful piece of music though.

I thought Ms. Keys did a fine job with it. It's very seldom that someone finishes the anthem and you think "gee, I wouldn't mind hearing that again" - like when Whitney did it...

But hey, that's just me.

She tried to turn it into a concert that drew the attention to her rather than the flag it was supposed to reverence. When done right, people should come away with the feeling, what a great flag representing a great nation instead of what a great singer.

Somehow, I get the impression that most of the pop singers who try to sing the national anthem are out the more to impress the audience than to honor our flag. They are more interested in deeing who can outdo the competion than simply trying to pay homage to our flag and the country it represents. Is it not strange that I have yet to hear a Canadian sing a jazzed up version of "O Canada" and have have watched many a hockey game on TV from Canada where it was sung before the opening face off.

I'm not really a fan of "vocal gymnastics", the runs they put in to show how many notes they can squeeze in. That's any song though, not just the Star Spangled Banner.
