BLESS THE SOLDIER

Bless the soldier along his way;
Keep him safe from day to day.
Give him courage to face his fears,
Not just today but through the years.

Grant him honor and dignity,
Send him friends in time of need.
Restore solace when day is done,
Dreams of tomorrow yet to come.

Give him strength to serve his best,
Firm faith when he’s put to the test.
Bring him home to his family,
Thank you Lord on bended knee.

BLUE EYES

I looked into his eyes
the windows of his soul
years had passed him by
somehow taking their toll.

His face was very drawn
but the eyes told the story
of what he had to do
to defend his country’s glory.

A wan complexion magnified
the eyes so very blue
like crystal stones that were
set untouched to shine anew.

Body so frail
he needed help to walk
Sit here in this chair
You don’t have to talk.

A smile creased his lips
I thought my heart would break
All his pain and suffering
a result for freedom’s sake.

What words could I say
I wanted to comfort him
All I saw were fragile bones
that once were fighting limbs.

Service connected injuries
the effects of Agent Orange
So unfair that men must live
with their bodies so estranged.

He got up from his seat
Shuffled down the hall
I’ll look for him tomorrow
“Blue eyes” is the name I’ll call.

BROTHERHOOD

Like the bond of a child to its mother
Veterans feel as no other
Because of them I can write these words
Because of them my voice can be heard.

It’s great to live in a land that’s free
March in parades, pray on bended knee
These are mine to do as I choose
Without freedom these rights I’d lose.

Like magnets that attract the steel
The brotherhood of veterans is oh so real
Togetherness, one common bond
United they stand
Hand in hand
Across this land
This band of brothers.
Thank you!

BROTHERS AGAIN

The young boys who left so long ago
Are middle aged now and older
They continue to bond with their fellow man
Their stories are true and bolder.

“Brothers” once again they’ve become
It’s a different place, a different war
Suffering the effects of days gone by
So many years to settle the score.

Now in a hospital they stay for treatments
They wish to put it all behind
Helping each other throughout the days
Truer friends you will not find.

Playing cards and bingo to pass the time
They smile and joke amidst their pain
Courageous and brave once again
Will they find the sun after the rain?

So you see their war never ends
It takes from outside and within
The cards that life has dealt them
A situation without an end.

They have given their whole life
Of themselves one hundred percent
For you and me, a land that’s free
Do we realize what their sacrifice meant?

DEAR JOHN

Mail Call
Perhaps it starts with Dear John, Dear Bill, Dear Tom or
It could be a hundred other names
Fill in the blanks
Anxiously the soldier reads on
Skimming over the whole letter and then
Returns to the Dear part
“I am sorry to tell you” or
“I’ve been meaning to say for a long while now” or
“I won’t be writing anymore”
“You see I’ve met someone”
“I can’t wait around forever”
“There is no easy way to say this”
“Good-bye”
Again the soldier reads the words
Not wanting to believe
He crushes the paper as tears fill his eyes
He wants to be alone and yet he wants
To run with nowhere to go
Only his love has sustained him in
This God awful place
Thoughts of their future and getting
Back home to her
Was all that he needed
He wishes now to end it all
Nothing left to live for
Yes, soldiers in combat
Die many different kinds of death.

DECORATION DAY

Wreaths, and crosses, and bouquets,
Placed lovingly decorate the graves.
Of soldiers who now lay at rest,
Soldiers who had done their best.

American flags are all in view,
A perimeter of the red, white, and blue.
And each marker tells a story,
Of a young man’s fight with guts and glory.

Off in the distance a band plays on,
A parade has started, the marchers along.
What is the real meaning of this day
That comes along at the end of May?

We commemorate the sacrifice,
Of all veterans who paid the price.
For freedoms bought and paid by them,
Are to be remembered time and again.

Author’s Note: Lest we forget – their sacrifice means not a thing if not remembered.
