Lakota Prayer
A Prayer by Lakota Sioux dedicated to the dead from the Vietnam War

Hóyewaye...! Mitakuye oyasin...! Remember this... We are all related...!

GrandMother East:
From you comes the sun which brings life to us all; I ask that you have the sun shine on my friends here, and bring a new life to them -- a life without the pain and sadness of the world; and to their families, bring your sun for they also need your light for their lives.

GrandFather South:
You bring the storms from the south which brings the rains to nourish us and our crops. Be gentle when you fall on my friends; and as the rain touches them, let it wash away the pain and sadness that they carry with them.

GrandMother West:
You take the sun from us and cradle it in your arms, then you bring darkness onto us so that we may sleep. When you bring the darkness to my friends here, do so without the nightmares that we have had for so long. Let your stars and moon shine on my friends in a gentle manner; and as they look at the stars, they remember that those stars are the spirits of my friends shining on them and those friends are at peace.

GrandFather North:
You are the Warrior, you have ridden alongside my friends here into battle, you have also felt their love and caring when you were wounded or lonely; ride alongside of them, for now they are in this the hardest battle for their life, the battle for inner peace. Now is the time for you to care for them.

GrandFather Sky:
May your songs of the winds and clouds sweep the pain and sadness out of my friends' hearts; as they hear those songs, let them know the spirits who are with those songs are at peace.

GrandMother Earth:
I have asked all the other GrandFathers and GrandMothers to help my friends rid themselves of the troubles that weigh so heavy on their hearts. This way, the weight they carry will be less; and they will walk more softly on you.

GrandMother Earth:
From your womb all spirits have come when they return to you; cradle them gently in your arms and allow them to join their friends in the skies. If they want to hurry themselves to you, tell them you are not ready; and they must wait, for now they can pass on peace to others.

May the Great Spirit watch over you, and may you be at peace.
I have asked all the other GrandFathers and GrandMothers to help my friends rid themselves of the troubles that weigh so heavy on their hearts. This way, the weight they carry will be less; and they will walk more softly on you.

THAT YOUNG MAN OF MINE

He left one cold, winter day
Onward to serve his country in a land far away
That boy of mine

Entered Iraq March 20 of 2003
Imbedded with the Division of Artillery
That boy of mine

No call, no mail and weeks slowly slipped by
Praying day and night, glued to TV
Watching intently perchance to see
Those beautiful blue eyes of that boy of mine

April came and passed into May
President Bush declared victory
Major combat over he said
Troops wounded, battle weary
Some paid the supreme sacrifice
And I realized my boy had become a man

Sense of humor in tack
Fell off a truck nearly 9 feet and yet
“Only the left side of my body in pain… lol
Managed to salvage my glasses… lol”
That funny young man of mine

Emails finally came, and then
Time marched on – no word again
He requested to switch with a friend
The friend to return to wife and children
That unselfish young man of mine

Imbedded with DMAIN
Legal Specialist is his game
No demands except –“Please send Tang!”
We’re all sending boxes to end his pangs
That sweet young man of mine

Pride, concern, love, anxious moments
Wondering if all is well
Only God knows where in that far land
My young man now dwells

News Release dated July 7 of 2003
Major Blount graciously stated in the entry
3rd ID deploying by end of August
That happy young man of mine

In the midst of the anticipated homecoming
A storm of disappointment arose
Seems our troops must stay awhile longer
Christmas now their goal
That frustrated young man of mine

Promoted on the tarmac to SPC
From Baghdad Airport to 2nd BCT
A little Iraqi town called Fallujah
People very hostile to our soldiers
That apprehensive young man of mine

Dear Jesus, Prince of Peace, Precious Friend
Keep my son in Your loving care to the end
As he willingly fights for our freedom
That brave young man of mine

The long awaited day finally came
Plane arrived, bused to Caro Field
Marched proudly to family and friends
Roses, balloons and banners all said:
“Welcome Home, Brent! We Love You!!”
That honored young man of mine

George A. Carrico and Meldora K. Rapp
WHEN’S MY DADDY COMING HOME

He left one sunny day
Never even said good-bye
He went to sail beyond the deep blue sea
Somewhere over there tonight
He’s fighting for our rights
Won’t you tell me when my Daddy’s coming home?

It’s lonesome here tonight
No one to hold me tight
No one to tuck me in my little bed
Since Daddy’s gone away
How lonesome are the days
Won’t you tell me when my Daddy’s coming home?

Dear Jesus, this I pray
Keep him safe by night and day
Please tell him that I love and miss him so
I long to see his face
Play our games and run a race
Won’t you tell me when my Daddy’s coming home?

Oh, Mister soldier man
By the uniform you wear
And by those decorations on your chest
You’ve been somewhere over there
The battles you did share
Won’t you tell me when my Daddy’s coming home?

Over there tonight
A row of crosses white
That marks the spot where dear old Daddy fell
No more he’s homeward bound
From the dread battleground
Won’t you tell me where my Daddy lies tonight?

George Carrico served in the Army in the Division of Artillery during World War II. Meldora, his daughter, added the 3rd stanza.

Meldora’s Note: My dad was shot out of a foxhole and was unconscious for days and then suffered amnesia for a period of time. My grandparents, who lived in a little coal-mining town in Jerome, Pennsylvania, were very concerned because they had not received a letter from him in weeks. He saw many of his comrades die on the battlefield and no doubt some of these men had wives and children waiting for them back here. Dad wrote this poem and then put music to it. I grew up hearing this song around Memorial Day every year.

You may have served in combat or while preserving peace.
You may have retired out or you may have served for a short time.
You may have been a draftee or a volunteer.
You may have served in the Corps, Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard or the Merchant Marines,

BUT YOU SERVED. YOU DID YOUR JOB HONORABLY and for that I am PROUD to call you 'Brother.'

You may have served during WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Nicaragua, Persian Gulf, Iraq or Afghanistan, But you served, you did not run.

You have earned your DD 214 with those words "HONORABLY DISCHARGED" two of the most noble words in the world.

Again I am proud to know each and every one of you.

*Today is Band of Brothers' Day*; send this to all your brothers, fathers, sons and fellow veterans you know. Happy Band of Brothers' Day!

To the cool men that have touched my life: Here's to you!!
I was never a hero, but I am thankful and proud to have served among them.

A real Brother walks with you when the rest of the world walks on you.

Send to all your Band of Brothers, because the fake ones won't.

It is the
VETERAN,
not the preacher,
who has given us freedom of religion.

It is
the VETERAN,
not the reporter,
who has given us freedom of the press.

It is
the VETERAN,
not the poet,
who has given us freedom of speech.

It is
the VETERAN,
not the campus organizer,
who has given us freedom to assemble.

It is
the VETERAN,
not the lawyer,
who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the
VETERAN who
salutes the Flag,

It is the VETERAN
who serves
under the Flag.

BLACK WALL OF GRANITE

As I stand here in God’s bright light,
staring at this Black Wall of Granite
Looking upon ALL the names that did
not come home, that cannot share this bright light
from this Black Wall of Night.
I think to myself: what did I do to deserve this right
to see the names upon this Black Wall of Granite?
Rest easy my brothers, for your pain is no more.

How important it is for us to recognize and celebrate our heroes and she-roes!
