God of our fathers, who by land and sea have ever led us to victory, please continue your inspiring guidance in this the greatest of all conflicts. Strengthen my soul so that the weakening instinct of self-preservation, which besets all of us in battle, shall not blind me of my duty to my own manhood, to the glory of my calling, and to my responsibility to my fellow soldiers. Grant to our armed forces that disciplined valor and mutual confidence which insures success in war. Let me not mourn for the men who have died fighting, but rather let me be glad that such heroes have lived. If it be my lot to die, let me do so with courage and honor in a manner which will bring the greatest harm to the enemy, and please, oh Lord, protect and guide those I shall leave behind. Give us the victory, Lord."

OMG – IT’S HAPPENING AGAIN

With flags to sell – tin cup in hand
be hates that’s he’s a broken man
they see this man and his routine
but don’t bother to notice he’s marine

Broken by death he daily faced
When in Vietnam he was placed
The friends he’s lost, forever haunt
The horrors he saw, forever taunt

The Viet-cong were cunning
he was sure he smelled them running
hiding in the bushes in the shortest of grass
He mowed them down as they tried to pass

The rain never stopped, turned into a flood
sleeping shoulder to shoulder deep in the mud
The use of Napalm was widely spread
with no oxygen to save the dead

Then he was captured, imprisoned in Hao Lo
What they went through, we’ll probably never know
Beaten with clubs, bones broken and shattered
The tactics of interrogation leave the body battered

No hero’s welcome in our home-land
when we were ignored we don’t understand
with purple heart in hand and smile showing pride
he’s grateful no one could see the rage he held inside

We killed for our country, children and mothers
the blood on our hands could be that of a brother
Fighting went on and on, we thought it would never end
When we came home to America we had no friends

Men and boys the draft didn’t ignore
we’re sent to fight on foreign shore
Fighting to keep America free
for all the people and for me

I feel this war is so wrong
let’s bring them home where they belong
fighting in wars both now and then
OMG – it is happening again

Tortured: When Good Soldiers Do Bad Things

[I dont feel like thanking them]

From the Inside Flap

"In Tortured, journalist Justine Sharrock brings us an eyewitness account of what it feels like to torture, revealing a huge chasm between what the headlines say about America's torture program and what really happened. Sharrock traveled around the country, talking to the young, low-ranking soldiers who worked at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo, documenting the consequences of torture. These soldiers, thinking they would be heroes, followed orders from the top with the assurance that those orders were both legal and noble. Later, they realized that they had committed war crimes. Their experiences left them feeling disillusioned and profoundly betrayed by the very government they had set out to defend. For too long, these soldiers hid their reactions and revelations, silenced by family and friends who were determined to see them as war heroes and by the many Americans who think we should have done even more...."

From the Back Cover

"Powerful and important. Justine Sharrock talks to soldiers whose patriotic duty was warped by the Bush administration, making torturers out of ordinary men and women. A must-read for all Americans concerned by the corrosive impact of the Bush administration's 'War on Terror' policies on the U.S. military." —Andy Worthington, journalist and author of The Guantanamo Files

"An extraordinary book that explores the ugliest underbelly of war. Sharrock takes the discussion of torture and prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo into new territory, delving into the lives of the soldiers on the ground assigned these brutal tasks. Throughout the book, Sharrock maintains a balance between empathy and tough reporting as she examines the anguish and denial of men who participated in what can only be described as acts of evil but who do not believe themselves to be evil." —Thomas B. Edsall, political editor, The Huffington Post

This statement is the A to Z of it all. That is why threads such as this one MUST be protested.

Matthis Chiroux said,”Can you really support the troops and not support the war? No. The troops continue to fight because they think you support them.”

WISHING I TOLD YOU

I thought that you would be happy, that I was still a virgin
I couldn’t wait to surprise you before you went off to Iraq
But all you did was yell at me, wanted to know why I did it.
What was I trying to do to you – to force you to come back?

Finally the night had arrived, I was ready to do it
how I’d kept it all a secret I guess I’ll never know
I thought that you’d be honored, that I gave myself to you
I really loved you a lot, and thought your love would grow

But I was so surprised when they called you for deployment
Not ever a week later you flew to Fort Bragg without complaining
Now I’m standing here at the window, about 3 months pregnant
Wishing I had told you, while you were still in training

You passed with flying colors and they put you on a plane
they promoted you to Staff Sergeant 'cause of your rapport
You never bothered to write me, so you never even knew
that I had had your baby, while you fought a civil war

I sent you a letter with picture of the son that looked like you
But they say you never got the letter, because you’d died that day
You tried to stop an insurgent – from killing a pregnant lady
Papers say you were a hero,'cause you got her out of the way

I am gonna raise him on my own, and tell him you were a hero
I’m gonna bring him to your grave, tell him you were coming back
Cause even though I knew you were angry, I always thought you loved me
And I expected to be reunited when you came home from Iraq

So what do I do now that my bf, my man, and my hero is dead
I can’t keep this to myself; God your Mom would be so mad
If I didn’t let her know she was a grandmother
To the son you never even knew you had

Grandma and I both love Jason Jr.,
And I have moved into the house that you grew up in
Grandma watches him when I’m in school
And we both tell him how much you loved him

We often drive down to visit the grave
we bring picnic and put down pretty flowers
Jason tells you how much he loves you
as we sit under the apple tree and picnic by the hour

Jason Jr's growing up real fast
I wish that you could watch and see
'cause boy he looks just like you
but honey he acts just like me

Author’s Note: I met a woman on-line who, pregnant with her soldier boy friend’s baby, didn’t tell him before he died in Iraq – this is her story.

All my life someone in my family has honorably served in the military.
I know that most REAL Americans know that if it weren't for the military we would all be speaking a different language and never know the freedoms that we enjoy in this country.
I lived 2 years in Pakistan. Every week someone would come and ask if we would sponsor them so they could come to 'our' country. They wanted our freedoms.
Yes, I honor those who have died for their family, homes, friends and country.

Indians were American, before there was an America? Swedish schooling seems to be lacking as well.

Daily Horoscope for May 18

Libra

Is a relationship getting dull and predictable? If so, it's time to inject some spontaneity into it, preferably by doing things on the spur of the moment and taking a few risks. Maybe you should go out for a meal for a change. There could also be a surprise in store when you realize you're attracted to someone who's totally different from your usual type.
