Sharrock traveled around the country, talking to the young, low-ranking soldiers who worked at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo, documenting the consequences of torture. These soldiers, thinking they would be heroes, followed orders from the top with the assurance that those orders were both legal and noble. Later, they realized that they had committed war crimes. Their experiences left them feeling disillusioned and profoundly betrayed by the very government they had set out to defend. For too long, these soldiers hid their reactions and revelations, silenced by family and friends who were determined to see them as war heroes and by the many Americans who think we should have done even more...." |

Judged: 17 17 16 From the Back Cover "Powerful and important. Justine Sharrock talks to soldiers whose patriotic duty was warped by the Bush administration, making torturers out of ordinary men and women. A must-read for all Americans concerned by the corrosive impact of the Bush administration's 'War on Terror' policies on the U.S. military." —Andy Worthington, journalist and author of The Guantanamo Files "An extraordinary book that explores the ugliest underbelly of war. Sharrock takes the discussion of torture and prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo into new territory, delving into the lives of the soldiers on the ground assigned these brutal tasks. Throughout the book, Sharrock maintains a balance between empathy and tough reporting as she examines the anguish and denial of men who participated in what can only be described as acts of evil but who do not believe themselves to be evil." —Thomas B. Edsall, political editor, The Huffington Post |

What was I trying to do to you – to force you to come back? Finally the night had arrived, I was ready to do it how I’d kept it all a secret I guess I’ll never know I thought that you’d be honored, that I gave myself to you I really loved you a lot, and thought your love would grow But I was so surprised when they called you for deployment Not ever a week later you flew to Fort Bragg without complaining Now I’m standing here at the window, about 3 months pregnant Wishing I had told you, while you were still in training You passed with flying colors and they put you on a plane they promoted you to Staff Sergeant 'cause of your rapport You never bothered to write me, so you never even knew that I had had your baby, while you fought a civil war I sent you a letter with picture of the son that looked like you But they say you never got the letter, because you’d died that day You tried to stop an insurgent – from killing a pregnant lady Papers say you were a hero,'cause you got her out of the way I am gonna raise him on my own, and tell him you were a hero I’m gonna bring him to your grave, tell him you were coming back Cause even though I knew you were angry, I always thought you loved me And I expected to be reunited when you came home from Iraq So what do I do now that my bf, my man, and my hero is dead I can’t keep this to myself; God your Mom would be so mad If I didn’t let her know she was a grandmother To the son you never even knew you had Grandma and I both love Jason Jr., And I have moved into the house that you grew up in Grandma watches him when I’m in school And we both tell him how much you loved him We often drive down to visit the grave we bring picnic and put down pretty flowers Jason tells you how much he loves you as we sit under the apple tree and picnic by the hour Jason Jr's growing up real fast I wish that you could watch and see 'cause boy he looks just like you but honey he acts just like me ©Copyright July 1, 2008 by Linda A. Racaniello Author’s Note: I met a woman on-line who, pregnant with her soldier boy friend’s baby, didn’t tell him before he died in Iraq – this is her story. |

Judged: 2 2 2 All my life someone in my family has honorably served in the military. I know that most REAL Americans know that if it weren't for the military we would all be speaking a different language and never know the freedoms that we enjoy in this country. I lived 2 years in Pakistan. Every week someone would come and ask if we would sponsor them so they could come to 'our' country. They wanted our freedoms. Yes, I honor those who have died for their family, homes, friends and country. |
