If you don't have shortening you can use butter
If you don't have vinegar you can use lemon juice
If you don't have sour cream you can use yogurt
If you don't have cracker crumbs you can substitute rolled oats or bread crumbs
when making a cake or cupcakes...you can substitute apple sauce for shortening...it's much healthier for you.

wasn't sure where to jump in.

Have always used apple sauce for cakes etc., or also add a bit of apple butter also for the spice & color.

Keep pumpkin pie spice instead of cinnamon .

My stove was broken recently, I learned to make rice in the microwave. I am a hard sell usually, but after a bit of practice I found a fool proof method & it comes out as good as from my cast iron pan. Rick

I know folks who use V8 in place of tomato juice when making halubki (pigs in a blanket).
