New York today

Good Thursday afternoon. Its in the low 20s, and the temperature is struggling back up to normal.
Meanwhile, Manhattan has been converted into a Super Bowl fan zone.
But we found ourselves wondering: As millions in the New York region are riveted to their screens on Sunday for the Super Bowl, will some public places be empty?
In fact, yes.
Roads:Once the game is about to start, it is about as light as you can imagine, the former transit commissioner Samuel I. Schwartz, now known as Gridlock Sam, told us.So if you need to get somewhere, do it while the game is on.
The game starts at 6:30 p.m.
Late Sunday night will be terrible. Only New Years Eve is more deadly, Mr. Schwartz said.
Emergency rooms: If youve been putting off that appendectomy, no more excuses. Shorter waits during the game.
Churches: Yes, and no. Some see lower numbers. But many churches, like Abyssinian Baptist in Harlem, have Super Bowl Fellowships. Cheetos pie for the Lord!
Gyms: Tommy Chin, who works at New York Sports Club on the Upper East Side, said attendance slumps, only to increase super duper a lot on Monday night. Spin class of shame.
