It is 15 years since, that one Winter's day I heard a howling noise
coming from underneath our garden shed, and further investigation
I discovered a tiny black cat, no bigger than a kitten, had taken
refuge under there.
She was petrified of people, possibly because she had not been handled by humans, which classified her as feral.
I made no attempt to catch her at this point, it would have been futile,
instead I placed a bowl of food just underneath the chalet, followed
by a saucer of warmed diluted evap milk. I did this twice a day for
over a week, then gradually placed the food closer to the house, she would only come to the food when I placed distance between me and her.
One day was particularly cold and wet, and she was soaked, so I made a grab for her and quickly put her inside my housecoat and brought her indoors. For six months this little cat lived behind the bookcase, emerging only at night. Until she got braver and starting sitting close to us but remained untouchable. It was a great day when she took food from the hand!
This developed into her rushing to greet me when I came down of a morning, and sitting on my right, always my right, shoulder while I watched the news, purring down my ear.
We lost Milly at the end of last year, she was the sweetest cat you could ever wish to meet, and proved it is possible for a 'feral' to adapt to being a housecat...a member of the family in fact.
