All this is from memory, so forgive me if I get a few of the facts incorrect--I should google, but anyway.

Prince John, youngest son of Henry and Eleanor of Aquitaine. Called John Lackland because by the time he was born, all the provinces and properties were already "promised" to the older brothers. Just from reading, I'd guess Richard the Lionhearted was Eleanor's favorite and John was Henry's. Seems like there was a Geoffrey and maybe another brother that were older than Richard. Anyway, Richard got his mother's holdings in France--Normandy, Aquataine, and maybe Anjou.

Anyway, Richard was an absent king for most of his monarchy, and John just always seemed sort of cruel to me, in my readings. He doesn't appear to be very, diplomatic (maybe that's the word I'm searching for) or very smart politically. He ended up losing all the territory in France that his mother had brought to her marriage for refusing (among other things) to appear as subservient to the king of France (who's name escapes me)

He disrespected the tribal chiefs of Ireland (and/or Scotland) and acted more as a conquering overlord than a king who was interested in his people's welfare. Seems I remember a story about him using one chieftain as a footstool....

He waged war against France to get his holdings back--and hopefully getting some prestige back as well. And the need for increased revenues was so great that the government became increasingly cruel.

Finally, he was forced by his barons to sign the Magna Carta at Runnymeade which seems like led to yet another (or continuation of) war.

Anyway, I've always thought of him as a king of cruelty, and wondered if it was actually fact or "royal legend" that there would never be another King John of England.....

That sounds plausible. He is almost portrayed in history as a cross between Simon Legree and Attila the Hun.

The words I said to Oki while giving birth to his 9 pound son are not fit to print...... LOL. So if that's all she said, she's a strong woman indeed.....
