Actually, they do eat hay. Other than the obvious Google to actually find out if this statement is true, the State of Georgia found this out the hard way. They spread hay on the roadside to prevent errosion during the colder months - through the same time period there were more deer killed in taffic incidents than in the previous 3 years combined - and the hay disappeared.

"Whitetail deer eat large varieties of food, commonly eating legumes and foraging on other plants, including shoots, leaves, cacti, and grasses. They also eat acorns, fruit, and corn. Their special stomach allows them to eat some things that humans cannot, such as mushrooms and poison ivy. Their diet varies by season according to availability of food sources. They will also eat hay, grass, white clover, and other food that they can find in a farm yard."

They have also been known to feed on small birds, field mice and dead carcasses.

And in Yellowstone, they do hay drops to feed deer, buffalo and elk in winters where there isn't a lot of natural food available.

There is a large population of Whitetail deer here in Ohio.

I live on a 52 acre farm that has a creek running through close to the back of the property. I have my own hayfield because I have horses. I throw hay out for them every year in the winter and they don't eat it. I looked it up a couple yrs ago on the net and it said they don't eat hay...they don't mine..
