LOL..

With respect, those were not his *exact words*
at all(:
but it's what 'I' heard when he resigned his post.

Irrespective of a cross section of
religious beliefs here on OFFBEAT..
it is an historical event.

Personally,
IMO,
When they elect a new pope,
they should seriously go for a younger person..

I believe a woman can also apply
[lol if that's the right phraseology]!

It is being widely whispered..
the next POPE will be black,

and WHY NOT, I say -

fine by me, if he is.

Any thoughts?
maybe

He is not well and has trouble getting around, he should be allowed to retire. Its' not they way things usually go, but this is a New Time and change is GOOD.
Let the man live out his last days in comfort and dreaming of what ever they dream of.
Its not the end of the world.

Hi Grace!
my first thoughts were "WTF??"
you don't get to just quit this gig...
and then I wondered why not quit either BEFORE or AFTER Lent,
no sense in this leaving partway in

so,
those are my thoughts.
I am a good Catholic girl, born and raised in parochial schools,
and I am now looking forward to the men in the tall red hats and capes descending on Rome and the wisp of smoke
(I hate change, but it is something I accept will happen.)

To me the pope is just another man of the cloth. No better, no worse, than a good country preacher. Popes are always changing rules when they feel like it, intead of sticking to the word of God.

God's word never changes.

Thanks for your thoughts Debra 27,

interesting too.

I really believe he is doing the right and sensible thing,
by resigning his post..
if he feels unable to cope.

I remember the last Pope and how old age
and infirmity overcame him,
and he had no problem with being seen in public in
that condition, it always made 'me' feel uncomfortable,
when I'd see him, but, of course, that's just my opinion,

others admired him tremendously for staying in office
to the bitter end.

I guess I just assumed they had to die in office, since that is how it usually goes.
(but I certainly would not to die at my desk, you know?)

Sad to see him go.

Loses a lot of perks, you know! The popemobile, nice chairs, an italian villa with a porch, and all you have to do is wave your hand and people wait on you hand and foot.

Your assumption was correct.. as,
it was always expected that whoever was Pope
at a given time, that person would be expected to see it
through, as you say, to the very end..

This man Benedict just broke the mold!

Apparently it was approx 600 yrs since
the last Pope stepped down!

Changes!

I know some of the issues with old age that my own mother is having to deal with. Perhaps the pope has some debilitating embarrassing concerns he doesn't want to risk in public. For whatever reason he decided to step down, only he knows what is best for him. I think he is brave and sensible for accepting the inevitable.
