I've never heard of diseases being passed on through breast milk, but I guess it might be possible these days.

HIV and other serious infectious diseases can be transmitted through breast milk. However, the risk of infection from a single bottle of breast milk, even if the mother is HIV positive, is extremely small. Very true. I know an HIV+ couple who gave birth to 2 HIV- kids. The hospital took precautions, the mother didn't breast feed, and the health department made her give the babies the HIV cocktail for a year and be regularly tested during that time. They have tested negative every time since them. So even HIV+ mothers can give birth to babies without it.
