I don't think you could call them hippies--too young. Most of the ones that I've seen articles about, or tv shows, are all 35 to 50, or so. Families who are trying to instill a different set of values to their children. I won't call it more traditional--cause traditional is a relative term--I'll just call it different.

The statement the south has no culture. That is the most ignorant clueless statement ever posted!! The south is in of itself culture. The south is overflowing in culture. To think that we don't have access to culture and the finer things in life just show how much of a simple thinker u truly are.
Hi, Ly. I'm gonna just make a few comments, I know you wont mind cuz you know me....

1. Being raised with morals, values and common decency isn't just a south thing. It's a good parenting thing. Anywhere you go you're bound to find someone that hasn't been raised right. Maybe those in the south tend to think those of the north are crude etc and maybe northerners tend to think similar of the south. Putting people into a category based solely on their geographical location is kinda silly in my opinion.(You may be truely right on the gentleman thing but my man is a gentleman and the only one I have eyes for so I stopped looking a long time ago...)

2. There are dirty cities all over the US. Not just in the north. And the same goes with acres of yards. I have acres of green grass surrounding my place and so do all my neighbors. And I live in NY, was raised in PA and had acres there too. I would venture to say that I've been down south, lived down south for a bit and unlike some yards down there at least mine has grass in it.(LOL)

3. As for culture... it's everywhere America is a melting pot of all cultures and that's what makes this place great.

Anyone who judges another or speculates their upbringing based on where they're from is a fool and might be overlooking many good qualities based on their own personal bias. It's time for people to take their blinders off and see that we are all individuals and all different.

Well, there's my two cents... I expect change!

Most Southerners have a pretty good grasp of the English language.
Why, just the other day I heard a young couple coming off the fairy:(blonde girl with cowboy hat)"Jim Bob, if I catch you using my dipthong again, I'm going to kick your dangling participle back to it's pre-position!"

Absolutely! Any so-called "bad rap" the South gets, we bring on ourselves by wearing camo and those stupid caps to weddings, funerals, church, etc. The average southern man can't even be bothered to wear a coat and tie to his own wedding.

And, don't even get me started on Skoal, Copenhagen, and Redman!

As a southern boy born and raised in the south and then moving north for employment reasons years ago I find I get as much flack down south for being a dam Yankee as I do up here for being a hick hillbilly, I think good ole country folks are pretty much the same where ever you go. I'm very proud of my southern heritage, it is what I am today but am also thankful to the state I live in now, its been good to me so all in all, I don't think it really matters where you're from, its all a state of mind and what's in your heart.

Ha hey shady of course u can!!
That was my point! Why I was mocking the northerners thoughts about the south, and their lack of complex thinking about what the south is really like.
Mostly u made since,) tehehe
But u have to admit that the south hating on the thread is just full of ignorance and lack of knowledge. The pure ridiculousness of those ideas about the south makes yall look foolish.:)

<quoted text>"Live off the land" doesn't mean--and never did--farming in the way you are describing. Lots of farmers that raise corn, soybeans, tobacco, cattle, do not describe themselves as "living off the land" But true living off the land, at one time, was going to the woods for months at a time, with very little to no supplies, and finding ways to sustain yourself. Now, there is a movement--not just in the South, but also West, of living off the land--self sustaining homesteading, as it were. Using solar power, having a goat or two for milk and meat, chickens for eggs, growing 80 to 90 percent of your families needs--bartering for another 5% or so--then going to the grocery for the balance. Most are even managing to not use "traditional" groceries, but co-ops for things like flour and sugar. It's very interesting to read about, but I don't think it's for the majority of people though.
That was my point. Very, very few southerners(or anyone for that matter) actually live off the land; contrary to what Hank Williams Jr. would have us believe.

Some very good posts here! None of them are dumb quotes trying to deflect culpability away from slave owners for the Civil War though. That's just ignorant, revisionist history.

However, trying to promote southern *superiority* is every bit as silly as trying to rewrite history. No less a oratorical statesman than Darrel Waltrip once noted that, you go 20 miles out of ANY city and you are "in the country".

As an American who has traveled all over the US, I promise you this is true.

What some here (the one's who aren't trying to justify the Civil War and racism, at least) are trying to say is, they like country living. Well, fine! To each his own. If you don't know that there are country folk in Wisconsin or New York (the state) you need to get out more, maybe crack a book now and then.

If you're still stuck on *southern heritage* and the 2nd place finisher flag, you're just stuck on stupid and can't be helped.

I think you are living in a fantasy world of days gone by. i've lived in the South(Texas, Louisiana,Oklahoma) my entire life,(60 yrs.)and those folks who raise their children with morals and values are quickly becoming the exception rather than the rule. Drug addiction and alcoholism are rampant. 11 of the top 15 states for teen pregnancy are in the South.

As for gentlemen, try to get one in a coat and tie, or to take of that stupid cap when he enters a building. LOL More seriously, 5 of the top 10 states for women murdered by men are southern states.

States with the highest rate of violent crime? The south does a little better with 4 in the top 10. However, the South only has 2 in the 10 states with the lowest rate of violent crime.

You might want to start locking your doors and keeping an eye on those kids when they are outside playing.

Historians debating the origins of the American Civil War focus on the reasons seven states declared their secession from the U.S. and joined to form the Confederate States of America (the "Confederacy"). The main explanation is slavery, especially Southern anger at the attempts by Northern antislavery political forces to block the expansion of slavery into the western territories. Southern slave owners held that such a restriction on slavery would violate the principle of states' rights.

Abraham Lincoln won the 1860 presidential election without being on the ballot in ten of the Southern states. His victory triggered declarations of secession by seven slave states of the Deep South, and their formation of the Confederate States of America, even before Lincoln took office. Nationalists (in the North and elsewhere) refused to recognize the secessions, nor did any foreign government, and the U.S. government in Washington refused to abandon its forts that were in territory claimed by the Confederacy. War began in April 1861 when Confederates attacked Fort Sumter, a major U.S. fortress in South Carolina, the state that had been the first to declare its independence.

As a panel of historians emphasized in 2011, "while slavery and its various and multifaceted discontents were the primary cause of disunion, it was disunion itself that sparked the war."[1] States' rights and the tariff issue became entangled in the slavery issue, and were intensified by it.[2] Other important factors were party politics, abolitionism, Southern nationalism, Northern nationalism, expansionism, sectionalism, economics and modernization in the Antebellum period.
The United States had become a nation of two distinct regions. The free states in New England, the Northeast, and the Midwest[3] had a rapidly growing economy based on family farms, industry, mining, commerce and transportation, with a large and rapidly growing urban population. Their growth was fed by a high birth rate and large numbers of European immigrants, especially British (in particular, Irish) and German. The South was dominated by a settled plantation system based on slavery. There was some rapid growth taking place in the Southwest,(e.g., Texas), based on high birth rates and high migration from the Southeast, but it had a much lower immigration rate from Europe. The South also had fewer large cities, and little manufacturing except in border areas. Slave owners controlled politics and economics, THOUGH ABOUT 70% OF SOUTHERN WHITES OWNED NO SLAVES and usually were engaged in subsistence agriculture.
